WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER & FALL EVENTS IN 2010 2010 began with very cold and wintery weather! January was bitterly cold and snowy and the whole month of February literally had us snowed in. A record 52 inches of snow closed everything except the area hospitals. It took the whole month to shovel out the city and we saw mountains of snow slowly melting away until the end of March. 2010 truly proved that Mother Nature is a woman and some man really mad her angry! The two events we had planned for Janury and February had to be canceled, so we didn't get together until March. MARCH 20, 2010 - DINNER AND A MOVIE The Scarlet Threads of Largo gathered at the home of Gloria Adams to finally enjoy each others company after a very hard winter. We were treated to a fantastic meal and then sat down to enjoy "The Blind Side", featuring Academy Award winner for Best Actress Sandra Bullock and newcomer Quinton Aaron as Michael Oher. June 5, 2010 - EVERYBODY'S BIRTHDAY PARTYThe Pink Hatters of the Scarlet Threads of Largo really treated their Red Hat Elders like queens! Unlike last year's crab feast (when they were just a bit uppity) our Pink Hatters everybody's birthday with a special birthday party. We were treated with a fabulous buffet of baked chicken, salad, deviled eggs, potato salad, baked beans, hot dogs, and beef & turkey hamburgers. Balloons floated in the air, delicious decorated sheet cake, home-made ice cream and cookies all for our enjoyment. We exchanged gifts and the Pinkies gave each of us 2 Red Roses! Queen Mother, Juanita, received a bouquet of roses and I got a prize for being the FIRST ONE TO ARRIVE (that will never happen again)! Sorry VQ Georga, but you got the last to arrive gift. We danced our food down, perfecting the Cupid Shuffle, Electric Slide and the Cha Cha Slide, so we can be on point for our next month's 1st Annual Crystal Ball. We welcomed a new member, Diana Haynes, and Gloria Simmons, who has been very missed, made a special appearance with her funny jokes. The sisterhood fellowship was wonderful and we give high praises to our faithful Pink Hatters, Rev. Dr. JaNice Parks and Monica Proctor! July 17, 2010 - First Annual Crystal BallThe Scarlet Threads of Largo are on the map as having the most elegant event of the year! The Crystal Ball was held in the Dorchester Room at La Fountain Bleu and was attended by 120 ladies "dressed to impress" in flowing gowns and cocktail wear. It was a steamy hot 95 degrees, but you wouldn't know it by the way we all strutted our stuff. The room was decorated very festive with red and purple draping everywhere - even on the bar. LaVerne, Yvonne and Gloria did a fantastic job with decorating each table with red & purple giftbags and elaborate, tall crystal vase centerpiece with Cali Lillies. The event began with a warm greeting from our Queen Mother Jaunita and our hosts, LaVerne and Yvonne. Our own Rev. Dr. JaNice Parks, said a blessing for a wonderful time of sisterhood. Our special guest was Angela Parker, who brought us all to tears with her rendition of I LOVE THE LORD. Our sitdown meal was served "family style" which means the servers brought the food to the table on platters which were passed around so everyone could get as much as they wanted of all the delicous food. Garden Salad with House Dressing, Roast Top Round of Beef with Burgundy Wine and Herbs, Salmon with Apricot Glaze, Stuffed Breast of Chicken/Homemade Sage Dressing Chef’s Choice of two Seasonal Vegetables, Hot Bread/Butter Strawberry Cheesecake( that melted in your mouth), Tea, Coffee - everything was sumptous! Pumpin Pete did it again! He is the best DJ in the Metro Area! His interaction with the ladies, expansive music library from oldies but goodies, down home blues and the latest dance hits - kept us on the dance floor. He even came from behind the music along with his assistant and taught us a new line dance! Bernice Vaughan and her sister was there with the latest hats and jewelry. Never mind she sold the hat I had my eyes on! (Gina - you snooze, you loose!) Angela treated us to another musical selection which she belted out and Gloria Simmons had us rolling on the floor with her poem, THERE'S A STRANGER IN MY HOUSE. Door prizes, giftbags, table giftbags for everyone, 50-50 raffle and best decorated hat contest (won by Sandra Kelsey's Crystal Ball hat)- if you wasn't there, you missed a very good time. But don't worry - LaVerne, Yvonne and Gloria have already begun for next year's Crystal Ball! DON'T YOU DARE MISS IT! SEPTEMBER 18, 2010 - 2010 RED HAT OLYMPICSThis year, the Scarlet Threads presents the 2010 Red Hat Olympics, was held on a glorious fall day at the Arboretum Recreation Center in DC. Even though the event was smaller than last year, we still had so much fun. Golf Red Hat Style was the hit of the day! In this version, you take a pair of pantyhose and tie one leg around your waist and have the other leg dangle between your legs with a small, hard ball inside. The object is to hit the golf ball by swinging your hips AND NOT USING YOUR HANDS OR FEET! Ladies were making moves they hadn't used in years! Bumps and grinds, deep knee bends...anything to hit the golf ball! I must say, the scene was so funny, a trio of male bicyclists had to come by to see what in the world we were doing. One of them even attempted a try. LaVerne Scruggs finally won. Another game that brought the youth out in all of us, was Bat-n-Ball or as some called it Bola Ball. You remember the wooden paddle with a rubber ball attached to it? Ladies were showing their expertise in hitting the ball in the air continuously. We had a relay race again this year and javelin throw. At least this year, I didn't get hit in the head! Queen Mother spent the afternoon rocking in a porch swing that was hanging under the trees. Back & forth she gently swayed with so much glee, she looked youthful and full of peace. We had lunch inside the recreation center and played a rousing game of Guestures. In this game, you are a silent screen actor performing 4 words, one at a time, that are held by a scene clapper. You only have 10 seconds for others to guess what word you are acting out. You earn the points that are on each card the have been guessed. A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR! |
