Lewes Lions To Install Benches, Tables, Grills
Lewes Lions Club has started a campaign to improve the parks and neighborhoods of Lewes by installing new benches, picnic tables and a set of BBQ grills. "Our goal is to improve our community and create a more family-friendly environment," said George Russ, chairman of the initiative for the Lions. Russ said all of the benches and picnic tables installed will be made of recycled materials which will make them more durable and maintenance free. "Some of the benches that we put up at the public beach are nine years old and still look like they're new," said Russ. One example of where we're putting some of these items is in the George H.P. Smith Park at Blockhouse Pond," said Russ. "There were tables and BBQ stands there many years ago but they have gone away over time. Many people use the park and this will allow them to enjoy it even more."
In all, the Lions hope to raise $50,000 which will allow them to install 27 benches and 25 picnic tables. Russ said all the donations will pay for the benches, grills and BBQ stands along with their installation. Russ said some money has been donated to the campaign in the name of long-time Lion and community supporter Gilbert Holt who passed away earlier this year. The Lions also placed two benches in the name of deceased Lions member Larry McLaughlin.
