Producer Anne-Marie Berger finds out what the Red Hat Society is all about during its founder's visit to St. Louis. The society began when Sue Ellen Cooper (also known as the Queen Mother), gave her friend a red hat and the poem "Warning." Now, there are more than 164 chapters of the Red Hat Society in the area.

Happy Hatting!!

ORIGIN OF THE RED HAT SOCIETY

The Red Hat Society resulted from the giving of one birthday gift. In November 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper, (Fullerton, California) presented her dear friend, Linda Murphy, with a red hat and a copy of the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph. The orginial intent was that Linda hang the hat on a hook next to the framed poem, as a decorative reminder to loosen up as she got older. The gift was a hit! Other friends of Sue Ellen expressed an interest in receiving the same gift as they reached their 50th birthdays. On April 25, 1998, dress in purple and their red hats the ladies went to a tearoom. This was the brginning of our Red Hat Scoiety.

WARNING
by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman,I shall wear purple,
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and a pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

ONE FLAW IN WOMEN

Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their heart s break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes,
sizes and colors.
They'll drive, fly, walk,
run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you
The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have the compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have vital things to say and everything to give

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN . ...
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER
By Erma Bombeck (written after she found out she was dying of cancer)

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I wasn't there for the day.
I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, the sofa faded.
I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.
I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.
I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I would have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.
I would never have said "later, now go get washed up for dinner. There would have been more 'I love you's More 'I'm sorry's.'
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute, look at it and really see it...live it and never give it back.
STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!!
Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more or who's doing what.
Instead let's cherish the relationships we have with those who love us.

Chapter Insurance Information

CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) stated: "Good policy and we recommend that you go with the existing insurers".
If you belong to more than one chapter, you must have insurance for each chapter that you belong to for full coverage.
COVERAGE IN USA: The Insurance Company advised that as long as you are not hosting and organizing the event in the USA you would be covered for liability while visiting or participating in an event. They do however want you to make sure any transportation company that is hired to transport the Chapters has their own liability insurance. They have asked that you request to be added as an additional insured to their policy. More details will be forthcoming with your policy in a special letter.

CAR POOLING: This policy does not cover car pooling, please be sure check with your vechile's insurance company to make sure that you are covered.

ALBERTA RED HATTERS WE ARE

We have no official rules, although to be a red hatter, you must be 50 and over, wear a red hat and a clashing purple ensemble at all gatherings - to keep up the spirit and purpose of the (dis)organization. If you are under 50 - no worries - you are known as a Pink Hatter and proudly wear a pink hat with a lavender ensemble. When you reach the age of 50, you will RED-uate to the traditional colors. Gals under 30 are known as 'Pinkettes' and wear an ivory hat and pink outfits, they may embellish their hat with pink. We believe that this adds an element of fun to aging, which we think is invaluable to women in our society. We say that there is fun after fifty, as well as before, for women of all walks of life. The relief of life is comedy and light heartedness. Since we all share this walk together, we join our red-gloved hands and go for the enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.

Sisterhood ....A very special bond with very special ladies!

Our main responsibility is.....TO HAVE FUN!!!

TOP TEN REASONS TO WEAR A RED HAT

-It just goes so well with purple.
-Forms an instant bond with other wild women.
-Imparts a hint of scandal.
- Matches that sassy new underwear.
- Brings out the roses in one's cheeks.
-It's a great accessory for the Oscar night outfit.
- Makes bad hair days go "Poof!"
-Must buy those red shoes to match.
-Red is fiery, fierce and passionate.
-Red Hat ladies get to wear whatever we want!

THE STORY OF PURPLE
Purple is the color of riches and royalty. This color gives you a spiritual feeling, but the most beautiful attire is a smile.
Purple means mystery and intrigue. It means quick wit, creative thinking.

THE STORY OF RED
Red is the color of fire, the color of blood, the color of life. Red is the color of passion and love. A zest for life. A craving for excess. It is no myth that red is exciting. Just looking at red will increase the blood pressure, stimulate adrenaline and speed up the pulse and give you energy. Red is found in every language known to humankind.

ATTITUDE

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror,
and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.
'Well,' she said, 'I think I'll braid my hair today.'
So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror
and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.
'H-M-M,' she said, 'I think I'll part my hair down the middle today.'
So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed
that she had only one hair on her head.
'Well,' she said, 'today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail.'
So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed
that there wasn't a single hair on her head.
'YAY!' she exclaimed.
'I don't have to fix my hair today!'

Attitude is everything.
Be kinder than necessary,
For everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Live simply,

Love generously,

Care deeply,

Speak kindly.......

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...

It's about learning to dance in the rain.

QUEENS' COUNCIL

Queens' Council, promotes fun, friendship and frivolity to all those in attendance through meeting and networking with each other.
PURPOSE: to bring Chapter Queens closer together:
1) to share regional information, ideas and events
2) to discuss issues
3) to solve concerns that may arise
4) most importantly – to make new friends.

It is important to note that no one person runs, or is in control of the Queens’ Council (QC). It is for ALL Queens and Vice-Queens to share with one another. Each Queen will be treated as a Royal equal. No hierarchy will exist. No one is to delegate authority over others. It contradicts both the spirit and casual structure of the RHS.

COCOA: THE NEW VITAMIN!

Yes, Seriously. According to a study published in Chemistry and Industry, native Panamanians (who drink cocoa regularly) rarely suffer from strokes, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The researchers believe it's because cocoa contains epicatechin, a nutrient that protects the body from illness. Research has yet to be conducted on the antioxidant propertoes of marshamllows!

CHOCOLATE QUOTE OF THE WEEK
DIET TIP
Eat a chocolate bar before each meal.
It will take the edge off you appetite and you will eat less!

RED HATTERS

- Eat dessert first.

- Aspire to laugh much and grow old playfully.

- Are proof that there is life after wrinkles.

- Embrace the freedom age brings.

- Live the second half of life outrageously.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Stay tuned for more polls.

Past polls
What is your age?
Should our chapters be covered with insurance?
Does your chapter have a mascot?

Would you be interested in a Red Hat cruise?
What you would like to see for an Alberta Convention?
Why Do You Belong To A Red hat Chapter?
Should Alberta hold a Red Hat convention?
How many red hats do you own?

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Throw off the structures of Society, my dears..have fun...be outrageous Spend your children's inheritance on Brandy, Boas and gloves! Make up for the sobriety of your youth! Excel in your age and savor life. Indulge yourself because you deserve it! At age 50+ a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN looks at herself in the mirror...sees wisdom and laughter; puts on a red hat and goes out to have fun with the world! Be an inspiration to others because if you can't be an inspiration you'll serve as a warning!!
