Welcome to APNEF                     

The Association of Practical Nurse Educators of Florida (APNEF) is a statewide organization of registered nurses who teach in practical nursing programs and others interested in practical nursing education.

APNEF is a non-profit professional organization whose purpose is to improve the quality of practical nursing education in the state of Florida. Other functions of APNEF include networking with other instructors and updating members on issues in the state of Florida affecting nurses and nursing education.

The objectives of APNEF as stated in the by-laws:

  1. Promote the professional development of its members through presentation of continuing education workshops and seminars specifically designed to enhance the effectivenss of practical nurse educators
  2. Serve as a vehicle to disseminate pertinent information and issues of concern relating to practical nursing education
  3. Provide opportunity for the effective exchange of information, materials and ideas through the sharing of educational resources and clinical expertise of members
  4. Foster good interpersonal relationships with related professional, educational, and health care organizations
  5. Participate in and recommend action on local, state, national issues relating to practical nursing education and nursing practice

To assist in accomplishing the purposes of the APNEF organization, officers and board members (the executive board) are elected by the membership each year:

Rick Garcia, Executive Director of the Board of Nursing, reports that the Board is searching for a nursing education consultant for the education unit. This position is housed in Tallahassee, Florida. The position is posted as of June 22, 2007. Please contact Rick at rick_garcia@doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing for more information.


New members to the Board of Nursing, term to run from January 20, 2006 until October 20, 2009, are: Marie Seitz of Sebring (NP), Mary Jane Herrera of LaBelle (NP), and Rosa Carson of Tallahassee (attorney)


There is a listing of institutions offering remediation courses for those applicants who have failed to pass the NCLEX within 3 attempts. These include Pinellas Technical Education Center, Miami Dade County Public Schools, CNET - Home Study Course, Capscare Inc, and Greeville Tech - Online Course. Please suggest this to any of your former students who might be in need of such a course.


New CE Rules: All Florida-licensed nurses are now in a 24-month renewal period and must complete 24 hours each renewal period. Two hours on Prevention of Medical Errors is required; HIV/AIDS is now a one-time 1 hour requirement and Domestic Violence is now a 2 hour requirement every third renewal.

FNA Leadership Willa Fuller has been appointed to replace Paula Massey as the Executive Director of the Florida Nurses Association as Paula retires to North Carolina.

 

APNEF Meetings


The 2008 fall meeting and workshop will be held November 6 and 7, 2008, at the Embassy Suites in Altamonte Springs. Registration applications will be mailed to each school of practical nursing. A total of 5 contact hours for CE are offered and there will be a separate room for vendors adjacent to the meeting room.
The Executive Board of APNEF will meeting Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at 7 p.m.
