Tips
Cadets,
On
this page you will find the necessary information to have both
your BDU and Blues uniforms looking sharp.
Required Materials:
(1) 64 Oz. Bottle of STA FLO (Can be purchased at Wal-Mart)
(1) Pump/Stay Bottle (Can be purchased at Wal-Mart)
(1) Steam Iron & Ironing board
(1) Piece of solid material at least 12 x 12
(3) Hangers
Battle Dress Uniform
Tips for BDU’s
• Wash them alone (or with dark colors) on a cold setting with
very little soap (3 Oz.) at Extra slow/slow (Usually second
slowest setting)
• Do not put them in the dryer to dry them; let them air dry
outside in the shade (Prevents fading)
• Don’t forget your hat; do this in a sink; avoid getting the
brim wet
Tips for Starching & Ironing
BDU’s
Starching
• Wash BDU’s (Never starch BDU’s
dirty)
• Take the fresh pair of BDU’s after washing, and let them sit
for a couple hours
• At this point the BDUs should still be damp
• Fill Pump/Spray ¾ with a 100% mixture of starch (If BDU”s are
dry you need a ¼ Water ¾ Starch mixture; the reasoning for doing
this while the BDU’s are damp is to skip this)
• Hang your damp BDU blouse on a hanger outside or over tub in
an area where you can freely spray starch and leave them to dry,
take the pants and use 2 hangers (1 should be going through the
belt loops from the front and should be able to hold it by it
self, the other through the adjustable waist tabs this should
hold the pants in a upright position)
• Ensure the uniforms collar is correctly folded, all buttons
buttoned (Sleeves on loosest button) and the uniform is hanging
correctly as if being worn
• Use your piece of solid material to cover parts of the BDUs (BDU
pocket flaps, sleeve cuffs, nametapes/CAP tapes), usually these
areas will be affected negatively by the starch
• Spray entire uniform (Except noted areas) until thoroughly
soaked, and dripping
• Leave the uniform until completely dry
• Last, starch your hat until soaked except the brim
Ironing
• Take the dry BDU’s and go about
your ironing (Crease ½ from the BDU pant pocket to center your
creases)
• Place a soak or other material between your hand and hat when
ironing
• Slip a piece of cardboard under the BDU pocket flap to avoid
burn marks
Blues Uniform
• It’s preferred to have your Blues dry cleaned (Ensuring that
they know how to properly crease the sleeves and no where else;
be explicit)
• If you do choose to machine was them follow the same
instructions as for BDU’s
• Spot clean the collar and other parts of the uniform with a
damp rag and laundry detergent if needed whenever necessary
between washings
• Do NOT starch Blues pants or cover
• Use clean white meat tray packaging (Such as from publix) for
backing
• Measuring everything don’t go by your old bullet holes, or
finger
• With ties Half Windsor knots are preferred
• Keep all accessories in good condition (Scratches on belt,
nameplate, frayed ribbons, flight cap device, these all add to
your appearance)
Starching
• Even if you do have your Blues dry cleaned I recommend you
still starch and reiron your Blues shirt
• Hang it outside just as you would your BDU blouse
• Starch until damp NOT soaked it should NOT be dripping (Do
entire uniform including epaulets)
• Let dry then iron as normal
