Worth Magazine Names CIS in Charity Issue

CIS, as a national organization, has been named for the past two years by Worth Magazine as one of the "100 Charities Most Likely to Save the World" and most deserving of your support! For each $100 donated to all local CIS programs, $89 goes directly to providing needed programming in our schools.

CIS is proud to be a part of the Northeast Florida Prevention Initative. Through a partnership with Gateway Services of Jacksonville, we are striving to bring drug prevention efforts to St. Johns County. Using our Inter Agency Council and our Schools of Promise as a way to reach a broad spectrum of children, service providers and stakeholders, we are working towards the goal of making St. Johns County a safer and healthier environment for our youth and their families. More to come on these coalition building efforts in the near future.

Host of AmeriCorps St. Johns Reads!
During the 2001-02 year, our highly successful AmeriCorps St. Johns Reads! Project served over 180 students with one on one tutoring, and an additional 144 students in small groups at 9 schools and 5 afterschool sites. The results were stupendous. Of the 324 students receiving services, 83% increased at least a grade level in reading. For the 2002-03 school year, 264 students have been receiving literacy services, with 128 students served in individual tutoring sessions, and 136 receiving small group tutoring.

AmeriCorps is a national service project, where stipened volunteers offer service to their communities in exchange for a chance to give and to learn new skills, and ultimately receive an educational award.

These Members provide many valuable hours of community service in addition to volunteering in our schools. Some community events in which CIS and AmeriCorps have participated are:

  • Ancient City Kids Day
  • WIC Baby and Family Fair
  • R.E.C. Family Literacy Night
  • Christmas in the Park
  • Mill Creek S.T.R.I.D.E.S.
  • Homeless Coalition Christmas

    Schools of Promise

Our Schools of Promise program offers a unique opportunity to our 18 St. Johns County Schools of Promise. Through our monthly resource meetings, we are able to keep in touch with the needs that schools are unable to meet due to lack of manpower and lack of funding.
Schools are able to request a variety of multi-level services through our RFP process. This allows CIS SJC to bring to them what their specific needs require. A variety of providers speak at our monthly resource meeting, informing schools of opportunites from within our community. In addition to this, CIS is constantly looking for free resources available on the national level, from Tiger Woods and Target's "Start Something" to the non-profit clearinghouse for donated corporate items "Gifts In Kind International"; we also attempt to secure funding to provide needed services that are not already available in our community. This allows our schools to use community resources to then become "Schools of Promise" that strive to provide their kids the 5 basics that CIS and America's Promise believe can make the difference between failure and success for our St. Johns County children.
