Why Do We Do It?
Imagine waking up one morning, or having the storm finally pass and you walk outside from your shelter and you see this... What would you do?
When Hurricane Charley (August 13, 2004) took a turn and went away from us, our group formed. We went to Arcadia; saw first hand the devastation that occurred there over night. These people’s lives and homes had been shattered, and countless lives were lost. We just wanted to help be a part of their healing process, and they called us Angels. On the way home that day, we decided that we could not turn our backs, and we have been going back to disaster sights ever since.
Charley's Angels volunteers go through a lot of training each year, so that we can best help the families in need. Our teams Volunteers have taken training everywhere possible.
Southern Baptist Conventions, LDR Training, First Aid & CPR, CERT training, Fema's self study courses. We have members who have been trained to help with SBA/Fema paperwork; we have members who have taken training as Emergency Response Chaplains, Chainsaw Training... and more.
Here is Charley's Angels Team Leader - Jan Martini being thanked by Governor Charlie Crist & Congressman Gus Bilirakis for our teams help!
Volunteers were key during chill
Fresh Start for Pasco Inc., called an emergency meeting at 8 a.m. Jan. 1, 2008.
We received word that the temperatures were going to reach freezing for the next few days. We decided we needed to take action and help to protect as many of the homeless population that we could.
However, being that it was New Year's Day, no county or other organization offices were opened. Somehow, calling on people I knew through disaster work, we managed to get volunteers and donations of food, toiletries and blankets. We reached Lisa Hale from the CERT program and Pasco County's Emergency Operations Center, EOC, and she gave us the cots we were going to need.
With the help of 38 volunteers we clocked 401.5 hours in 3 1/2 days. We at Fresh Start for Pasco would like to thank all those volunteers for their hard work and dedication.
It's great to know you can count on some people to go the extra mile. Thanks for volunteering.
