Offerings from the Lodge ![]() Drums... This is how I was taught. Understand that every Tribal Nation has it's own way, and even sometimes every Clan within a Nation has it's "Natural Law" on such things... but this Way comes from my own Elders and is a good, general base for folks new to the Road. The Drum is Creator's most beloved music maker. This is why he put one within the chest of each of us (including our brothers and sisters who fly, swim, crawl, etc.) It is a Sacred Instrument which not only reflects the Heartbeat of the Mother, but reminds us of the trinity of the Standing Ones (trees) who gave us the Drum frame, the Four Leggeds (animals) who gave us the hide, and the Two Leggeds (us) who crafted the Drum itself. The three of us (relations) came together to bring the Drum from need to reality. Drums should not be set skin side down, should not be played when you have been drinking, drugging or when you are on your Moon Time. This last "law" is because women are too powerful at this time as they move life's blood and may amplify the Medicine of the Drum in a way not expected. You should never touch someone else's Drum without permission. You should never curse in front of a Drum. Drums are used not only for music, but for prayer. The sound travels to Creator's ear and is sometimes used for balancing energy the same way that the Sacred Sage is used... a sort of smudging of vibration. Think of the Native hand Drum as a Medicine Wheel. You should never play in the quadrant where you have not stood. In other words, I am 55 and past my Moon Time. I play in the East, the South and the West, but do not yet play my drum in the Northern quarter. That honor will come to me later as I work to become an Elder worthy of the name. I usually play in the eastern section to remind myself of how much I have to learn. If I play in the South, it may be because I am feeling my blood... and in the West when I need healing. Before playing your Drum, you should touch it lightly with your hand, asking permission in your Heart for it to sing. Remember that the hide of your Drum's face was taken from a living animal. When you strike the surface you are releasing the DNA of that animal back into the universe and it lives again. Do this, and all things, with respect and awareness of your place in the Sacred Hoop of the All-That-Is.
On the question of "Indian Names"... If you have always had a vague desire for an “Indian” or a “Spirit” name, perhaps you should ask yourself why. Traditionally the First Nations People were named in a way that reflected that culture. Some of these brothers and sisters had their names changed due to an event which changed things for them later in life. Since the Europeans came to Turtle Island and brought their culture and religion, native peoples began to often have two names… a traditional name in their own language and a “Christian” or English name. Many Indians today only have English names. Why is it necessary for you to have an Indian name associated with who you are as a human being? Do you have native blood, walk that path and want to honor the old ones? Is your new name one received through Spirit or an Elder or one you read about in a romance novel and thought was neat (like “Little Fawn Runs Softly” or “Big Eagle Medicine Stick”). When you meet someone, or groups of people, that have two names do you sit with them to learn why they have those names or how those names are used? Do you assume everyone there received their names in the same manner? Perhaps one person received their name from their Grandmother at birth, another may have had it come to them in a dream, and another may have had an Elder trained with the gift of naming do ceremony for them. Names are sacred… all names. If you come through decades of prayer and work and study to have Creator gift you with a name which reflects your spirit and your good path, then be proud. If your name is Franklin T. Currin or Rosemary Lynn Montague, then be proud. If your name is Slow Turtle or Rolling Thunder, be proud. Your name has come to you through your people. If it is meant for you to have a second name sometime in your life’s walk, this will happen. Don’t push for it. This, as all times, is a time to pray. - Many Ponies
OPEN COUNTRY Benjamin Dehart says that: "Open Country is simply a literal translation of my feelings, thoughts and quandaries. One of the catalysts for the creation of the song,is the tragic
fact that a good friend of mine has been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. This friend's free spirit echoes and reverberates through Open Country." Wolf's Heart Lodge is honored to be able to share these beautiful, poetic lyrics. May we all offer up smoke for Benjamin and his friend. Love is alive.by Benjamin Dehart
Where is this open country, where man has left no trace
Could it be in Arizona, where I watched those Ravens fly
Am I dreaming of Alaska, the heart of Grandmother earth
The badlands of Dakota, my spirit's been there so it seems
I must have lived a past life, some centuries ago These lyrics are copyrighted.

![]() Thursday, November 6, 2003 (Dade City) Hospice Ceremony for Papa Bill Wado Sky Dancer for representing the Lodge!
As the embers of the fire slowly died, I could feel my eyes growing heavy. I watched the wisp of smoke going gently up, creating figures. The more the smoke gathered, the clearer the figures became. I saw a man ride a horse toward me. The horse arched his neck, full of fierce pride. He stood on his hind legs, then stopped in front of me. Leaning down, the warrior smiled. His words were soft, like the smoke, but the meaning was strong. I could feel my heart beating as I listened… “You are my spirit. You are your Grandmother’s pride. You walk the Path that carried my Spirit many moons ago.” He gently reached out and touched me with his hand. I could feel his power flowing into me and it filled my whole being. I knew from that moment that my life would change. The road had been chosen for me - the path was rocky, and yet I knew with Grandfather with me that every bump would be a lesson learned. I smiled at him and nodded that I understood. As the blue haze gently replaced his spirit and my eyes slowly closed, I knew my dreams would be lessons to learn. When I awoke in the morning the fire was smoldering and cold, and there lay a feather and hoof prints. - Sue Redhawk Travis
![]() Moo... or is that Move?!? (Sky Dancer took this photo from the car window of a mom and her two young ones on the road as we were leaving the Traverse drumming.) They were about two inches from the car as we crawled past and were not interested in moving! Sweet, huh? Cultural Lesson - In the 1600's and during peace time, the local council and Peace Chief carried out the decisions of local concern. Often these dealt with civil disputes that allowed the clan system to render judgments. Cherokee law was based on an honor system, in which the spoken word held as much force as, if not more than, today's written contracts. When an oath was verbally taken on any subject, it was binding. When this honor system was broken, the clan membership punished the offender. The entire clan was responsible for the crime of one of its members, and there were no exceptions. The Cherokee were a law-abiding people whose ancient customs served them well, allowing them to maintain social harmony in their towns and a sense of common ethnic identity. Trust, through oral agreement, was the basis for the original form of Cherokee government. This proved as binding as any written charter or constitution because of the trust Cherokee people had in one another. ![]() Dogs may love trucks... but Kitties love sage! (at least Wick - the Lodge feline - does) offering below from "The Warrior Bard" (Benjamin Dehart)..."Sun Creation" as told by Leonard Crow Dog (Lakota): In a contemporary version of the Sioux creation myth, an elemental being named " Unknowing", spoke in lightning language saying: "Now we are going to make a human out of these elements. We will take the vein of the cedar tree to create a man who will be the caretaker of this land. His name shall be, Ikche Wichasha - the wild, natural two-legged; the wild, free human." SALUTE TO OUR DEAR BROTHER...
![]() WILBUR S. GORSKI* Papa Bill * August 5, 1923 - May 31, 2003 You sit still among us, Grandfather, your person retains its usual resemblance, and continues similar to ours, without any visible deficiency, except that it has lost the power of action. But whither is that breath flown, which a few hours ago sent up smoke to the Great Spirit? Why are those lips silent, that lately delivered to us expressive and pleasing language? Why are those feet motionless, that a short time ago were fleeter than the deer on yonder mountains? Why useless hang those arms that could climb the tallest tree, or draw the toughest bow? Alas! Every part of that frame which we lately beheld with admiration and wonder, is now become as inanimate as it was three hundred years ago. We will not, however, bemoan thee as if thou was for ever lost to us, or that thy name would be buried in oblivion; thy soul yet lives in the great Country of Spirits, with those of thy nation that are gone before thee; and though we are left behind to perpetuate thy flame, we shall one day join thee. Actuated by the respect we bore thee while living, we now come to tender to thee the last act of kindness it is in our power to bestow: that thy body might not lie neglected on the plain, and become a prey to the beasts of the field, or the fowls of the air, we will take care to lay it with those of thy predecessors who are gone before thee; hoping at the same time, that thy spirit will feed with their spirits, and be ready to receive ours when we also shall arrive at the great Country of Souls. We love you still... Papa Bill! May the stars carry your sadness away, - Chief Dan George
![]() NATIONAL NEWS: A University of California at Los Angeles team apparently has found the Iceland home of Snorri Thorfinnsson, the first person of European descent born in the New World. Icelandic sagas from the 13th century tell the story of how Snorri's parents led the first Scandinavian group that attempted to settle in Vinland -- on the Canadian coast -- around A.D. 1000. The attempt failed and the family moved to Iceland, but Snorri was born while they were there. The Vinland Sagas, which also tell the story of explorer Leif Ericson, are the earliest recorded history of the Scandinavian people, but there has long been a debate over whether they represent real events or are simply an allegorical tale meant to deliver a moral message. The 1960 discovery of Viking settlements at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland provided some confirmation of the sagas. The apparent discovery of Snorri's home provides more. Archaeologist Kevin P. Smith of Hunter College in New York City added: "This is a fairly large, fairly well-appointed house. It's in the right place, from the right time. It may well be [Snorri's home]." The sagas tell the story of four Viking voyages to the New World. The second saga recounts the story of the pagan Thorfinn Karlsefni, who married the converted Christian woman Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir. With three boats containing 60 to 70 people, livestock, seeds and other supplies, they left for the New World around A.D. 1000 to establish a colony. According to the sagas: "...Karlsefni's son Snorri was born [in Vinland] the first autumn and was 3 years old when they left." ''Conflict with the native population made the settlement impossible,'' Smith said, and they returned to Iceland, where they established a farm. Thorfinn sailed to Norway and sold a boatload of goods from Vinland, which made him relatively rich. Gudrid, described in the sagas as "the most attractive of women and one to be reckoned with in all her dealings," made one or more trips between Iceland and Greenland and eventually traveled to Rome to meet the pope. She became a nun and returned to Iceland, where she established a church. UCLA archaeologist John Steinberg's continuing project in Iceland is a survey of 26 farms in five areas of the Skagafjordur fjord valley in northern Iceland. This region, he said, "is one of the few documented chiefdoms" that are known. His ultimate goal is to understand how the chiefdoms, in which private properties' rights were enforced without a central government, eventually gave way to regional rule. But archaeology is difficult in Iceland. There are virtually no trees, so buildings were constructed from turf. The inhabitants also severely abused their environment. "They put way too many sheep on the land, and all the soil from the highlands eventually blew onto the coastal regions," Steinberg said. "As a result, the archaeology is invisible." The UCLA team has been surveying the region with sophisticated equipment that measures the electrical conductivity and resistance of soil. ![]() NEW LODGE FLAG! Due to the dear hearts who helped the weekend of March 6-7 at the Lodge yard sale in St. Petersburg, we are currently a little over $500 towards our $840 goal to reimburse Frank Maribal through Indian Stuff for the drum! Very impressive. Contact Sky Dancer (727/343-4638) or speak to him at the next mixed drumming with any ideas you have for raising these additional funds or to offer a few dollars for the drum fund. Shared portion of a Letter from Little Bird to Many Ponies - May 3rd: ![]() go to www.nyof.org - See how you can save children like these from slavery, rape and seperation from their families... it's easier than you think! (direct link elsewhere on this website) LESSONS FROM GEESE offering from Earth Flower Woman Next fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in a "V" formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way: *As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird imediately following. By flying in "V" formation the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. Learning: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another. *When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. Learning: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are. *When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the formation and another goose flies point. Learning: It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs. *Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. Learning: What do we say when we honk from behind? *Finally...and this is important...when a goose gets sick, or is wounded, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly, or it dies; only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation, to catch up with their group. Learning: If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that. REALITY SQUARED!!! The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less. We buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up our air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick t rips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete. Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, to speak and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind... FOUR STONES written by Strong Bear Red Heart Stone one is the color white, the stone of the clear conscience. It is when the mind and spirit is free as it searches for knowledge. The child in us asks the world why, where and when? The child does not see the evil or good in an event, but only see the event. Stone two is the color blue, the stone of creativity. As we gain knowledge our spirits soar in a sky of unlimited possibilities. We do not create with our hands, but rather with our hearts. The hands are only tools used by the heart, which can create beauty or ugliness if we chose. Stone three is the color red, the stone of wisdom and fire. This can be a time of sharing, building and harmony. Or, it can also corrupt and turn the soul black with hatred and fear. We must seek the guidance of the Great Spirit before we speak or take action. Stone four is the color tan, the stone of remembrance. What we leave behind for others is how we will be remembered through the ages. Our children and our children’s children will have the burden of our actions and words. As we carry the stones of life, place them gently in a circle on Mother earth so that a warm fire will burn for all to see and be comforted. CHEROKEE BEAN BALLS
