"Like the miner's canary, the Indian marks the shift from fresh air to poison gas in our political atmosphere; and our treatment of Indians, even more than our treatment of other minorities, reflects the rise and fall in our democratic faith."

- Felix S. Cohen, 1953

IMPORTANT: As you will read elsewhere on this site, we are a gathering of human beings of mixed heritage (native and non) seeking to learn about our collective past while respecting the old ways. There is never a "fee" for any ceremony or event... and we never present ourselves as anything other than the questing folks that we are.

"The life of an Indian is like the wings of the air. That is why you notice the hawk knows how to get his prey. The Indian is like that. The hawk swoops down on its prey ; so does the Indian. In his lament he is like an animal. For instance, the coyote is sly; so is the Indian. The eagle is the same. That is why the Indian is always feathered up; he is a relative to the wings of the air."

- Black Elk

"You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle. That is because the power of the world always works in circles, and everything tries to be round.... The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nests in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing and always come back again, to where they were. The life of a man is a circle, from childhood to childhood. And so it is in everything, where power moves..." Black Elk – Oglala Lakota

Give us hearts to understand.

Never to take from creation’s beauty more than we give;

Never to destroy wantonly for the furtherance of greed,

Never to deny to give our hands for the building of earth’s beauty,

Never to take from her what we cannot use.

Give us hearts to understand.

That to destroy earth’s music is to create confusion;

that to wreck her appearance is to blind us to beauty;

That to callously pollute her fragrance is to make a house of stench; that as we care for her she will care for us.

We have forgotten who we are.

We have sought only our own security.

We have exploited simply for our own ends.

We have distorted our knowledge.

We have abused our power.

Great Spirit, whose dry lands thirst, help us to find the way to refresh your lands.

Great Spirit, whose waters are choked with debris and pollution, help us to find the way to cleanse your waters.

Great Spirit, whose beautiful Earth grows ugly with misuse, help us to find the way to restore beauty to your handiwork.

Great Spirit, whose creatures are being destroyed, help us to find a way to replenish them.

Great Spirit, whose gifts to us are being lost in selfishness and corruption, help us to find the way to restore our humanity.

~ Big Thunder (Bedagi) late 19th. century Algonquin ~

Today is a good day to sing!

The members of Wolf's Heart Lodge (both the Sons and the Daughters of the Earth) love to sing and drum! Creator placed the drum within our chest and the fire in our voice to reach out in a joyful way. Below are a very few of the many songs we sing together at Circle (and elsewhere when asked!) Sometimes we sing in a First Nation's language, but more often in English. Even if you do not understand the words of a song offered up in Cherokee, Lakota, Crow or Delaware... you may come to be able to sing with us in time just by hearing it enough times in your heart. As we believe that drumming, chanting and singing are ways of Sacred Prayer, opening yourself up to the rhythmic vibrations of the beat and the cadence of the words is more important that your personal language skills or your known bloodline.

Our Lodge is one of inclusion. With the Elders teachings, we offer the traditional ways of many indigenous tribal nations (from Turtle Island). This we do to educate and lift up the people gathered, to respect the Ancestors by keeping the stories and lessons resounding here - in this place so different than their own in too many ways. If these traditional ways speak to your heart then that is good. If you learn of them and understand, but must at this point take a different path to connect in a good way with the Great Mystery while on your Earth Walk, then that is good as well. There are many paths to the top of the Mountain. The way of the Red Road fills us. You may feel the same.

Sky Dancer and I only attempt, in a humble way, to offer a Sacred Space to come together and learn and celebrate life. Our Lodge brothers and sisters are learning with every breath, so come join us soon and share your wisdom with us! Bring your drum (native or otherwise), rattle or rainstick, or if you don't have such there are always extras we'd love to share for the evening.

Wado to the four-legged and the standing ones and all the beings - in flesh and in spirit - who came together to make our drums. We are keepers of these drums, and do so in a respectful manner to honor them. May our drums and other instruments - including our voices - be used for great healing for all. A-Ho Mitakuye Oyasin - We are all related.

All my relations, I am one with you
In all that you teach me, I give thanks to you

In humble honor, I will stand tall
Walking straight the path of harmony
All my relations, walk with me

There is a woman who weaves the night sky
See how she spins, see her fingers fly

She is the weaver, and we are the web
She changes everything she touches
and everything she touches changes
She changes everything she touches
and everything she touches changes

Go and pray upon the mountain
Go and pray beside the ocean
And you’ll wash your spirit clean
Wash your spirit clean
Be grateful for the struggle
Be thankful for the lessons
And you’ll wash your spirit clean

WOMEN WITH WINGS

There’s a river of birds in migration
A nation – of women with wings.

RETURN THE SACRED HOOP

Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
We are many – we are growing, We wish to mend the Circle
We are many – we are growing, We wish to mend the Circle

Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
We are shining - we are glowing, We ask to join the Circle

Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
We are honoring - we are respectful, We wish to mend the Circle
We are honoring - we are respectful, We wish to mend the Circle

Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People
We are many – we are growing, We are the Sacred Circle
We are many – we are growing, We are the Sacred Circle

Oh Creator, Return the Sacred Hoop to your People

I see you in the flight of herons
I see you in the spout of whales
I hear you in the talk of dolphins
I hear you Mother Earth, I hear you Mother Earth

I see you in the snows of winter
I see you in the glow of spring
I feel you in the heat of summer
I feel you Mother Earth, I feel you Mother Earth

The ancient Elders of our Mother -
Honored Her and kept Her well
They took - only what they needed
and She honored them as well,
and She honored them as well

I question how we’ve lost our balance,
when man destroys all he sees
Why can’t he see You and Your Beauty
see Your Beauty Mother Earth,
see Your Beauty Mother Earth

We must try - to bring about our balance,
To live and work in harmony,
to see each other as related,
one entire family,
one with You Mother Earth

I see you in the flight of herons
I see you in the spout of whales
I hear you in the talk of dolphins
I hear you Mother Earth,
I hear you Mother Earth

I see you in the snows of winter
I see you in the glow of spring
I feel you in the heat of summer
I feel you Mother Earth,
I feel you Mother Earth

PRAISES -by Bill Miller

I praise you for the rivers the mountains and the streams
I praise you for the eagle, the visions and the dreams
I praise all your creations the mountains and the streams
I praise you for the eagle, the visions and the dreams
The visions and the dreams, the visions and the dreams

I praise you for my children the mountains and the streams
I praise you for the eagle, the visions and the dreams
I praise you for my people the mountains and the streams
I praise you for the eagle, the visions and the dreams
The visions and the dreams, the visions and the dreams

This gentle and healing song was taught to us by Erica (complete with hand motions). Thanks Beautiful!

Breathing in, breathing out.
Breathing in, breathing out.
I am blooming as a flower.
I am fresh as the dew.
I am solid as a mountain.
I am firm as the earth.
I am free.

Breathing in, breathing out.
Breathing in, breathing out.
I am water reflecting,
what is real, what is true,
and I feel there is space
deep inside of me.
I am free, I am free, I am free.

more to come!!!
