Welcome to DWC of St. Johns County
                                  
We welcome all Democratic or Democratic Thinking Women. Our meetings are informational as well as an opportunity for group discussions. We invite you to visit us and to join. You will enjoy your experience and we will make you feel right at home in our pursuit of democratic ideals.

The Democratic Women's Club meets in St. Augustine, Florida at Public Library North US 1 and San Carlos, near the carrousel beginning at 5:30 PM. We have our program first and our business meeting immediately follows.

The 53rd Annual state convention of the DWCF, Inc. was held this past weekend in Melbourne, FL.

Congratulations are in order for several members from our own Region 3:

Julia Heckendorn - St. Johns County Democratic Women's Club (SJCDWC) - elected to State 2nd V.P.

Marie Varon - Democratic Women's Information Network (DWIN) - elected to State Treasurer.

Sue Polimeni - DWIN - elected Region 3 Chair.

Elaine Domenick - SJCDWC - elected Region 3 Vice Chair.

About 170 voting members and guests from around the entire state of Florida attended the weekend meetings, workshops, meals, and activities. Our Region sent 13 members.

1. The membership passed 4 resolutions (a special thanks to Elaine Weistock, Pres. of the Clay County Democratic Women's Alliance for this information):

    2. An endorsement of State ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

    3. Opposition to coastal oil drilling.

    4. Discontinuation of the use of the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) as the predominant factor in grading and penalizing schools.

    5. Endorsement of legislation enabling nonviolent ex-felons, upon completion of their sentences, to receive automatic and retroactive restoration of their voting and other civil rights.

Keynote speakers included:

    • Author Linda Taylor who discussed "Great Women Exploring Nature - How Wild Florida Influenced Their Lives"

    • Author Doris Weatherford highlighting the women Governors throughout our country's history.

    • U.S. Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas

    • Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman
