Welcome to the Egmont Key Alliance Website...

The Egmont Key Alliance is a Citizen support Organization (CSO) dedicated to protecting, restoring and preserving the natural, historical and cultural resources found on Egmont Key, a barrier island located at the mouth of Tampa Bay.

Discover Egmont Key!
Annual Discover the Island Fundraiser

You can visit one of Tampa Bay’s hidden treasures and be introduced to the many cultural, historical and natural aspects of the island through interpretive presentations. For 2009, this event takes place on Saturday November 14th and Sunday November 15th. In order to attend, you will have to get a ticket first! Many of our previous Discover the Island visitors have told us they plan to return, so we expect record attendance again this year. The best way to ensure you’ll have a seat on our boats is to purchase your tickets in advance. For more information on tickets, transportation, activities, click the Discover the Island link to the left

You are welcome to visit the island at any time during the rest of the year either by joining the Egmont Key Alliance volunteers on their regular workday, the third Saturday of each month (Please e-mail using the link below if you plan to attend) or by taking the Egmont Key Ferry which leaves from the Bay Pier at Fort DeSoto Park. (It would also be a good idea to call the Ferry 727-867-6569 to make sure it is running and at what times)

Become a Member

Membership in Egmont Key Alliance can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. On the third Saturday of each month, Alliance volunteers serve the island in a variety of activities ranging from maintenance on the lighthouse and support structures; planting native plants and grasses in an attempt to restore the original environment and control beach erosion; protection of bird nesting areas on the island's beaches during their nesting season; control of invasive and exotic plant species; cleanup of brush and trash, both in the island's interior and on the beaches.

In addition to the Annual Banquet, there is usually an overnight outing scheduled once a year to other State Parks around the state.

The Alliance would not exist without the dues paid by its members and other donations. To become a member, please use the Membership link at the upper left of this page.

If you are unable to make the commitment to full membership, but would like to help the Alliance in its efforts, donations in any amount will be gratefully accepted. Please send them to the address below. You can also make donations online using the Donate function within the Membership link at the upper left on this page.

More Information About The Island

The Island has a rich and varied cultural and historical background, dating back to the early Native Americans. To learn more about the history and background of Egmont Key, please click on History

Egmont Key has played an important role in military operations and coastal defenses, most significantly, preparations for the Spanish American War. For an explanation of the military operations on Egmont Key please click on Military

The Lighthouse, now over 150 years old, its construction, operation and history can be found by following this link: Lighthouse

The Island is not a typical barrier Island, although it does have many of the same properties. To learn more about the dynamics of the beach and constant problems with erosion, click on Beach

Because it is isolated from the mainland, the Island has many interesting plant and animal species. Most importantly, it serves as a nesting site for numerous species of birds as well as a productive site for sea turtle nesting due to its isolation.
