Coach Brown will provide a list of needs and wants for the football program.
Coach Brown provided discussion on the Coaches Clinic that was held in Atlanta. The clinic was very informative and beneficial. It was agreed that another clinic would be beneficial, preferably a clinic held at the University of Florida. Mike Mekara provided a brochure.

FERNANDINA BEACH QUARTERBACK CLUB
2005 AGENDA
- Uniforms: Are there enough uniforms for the expected increase of athletes? Are the pads in a type of condition that provides the utmost safety and protection for our athletes?
Coach Brown advised the QB Club that this issue was being completed with the assistance of the High School.
Practice field equipment: What is the condition of the Blocking Sled? Do we have enough tackling dummies and blocking pads?
Coach Brown advised the QB Club that this issue was being completed with the assistance of the High School.
Weight-lifting room: Is the weight room satisfactory for reaching our objective for conditioning our athletes?
Coach Brown stated that there is a need for additional equipment for the Football Teams personal weight room.
Pirate Field Press Box: The roof needs replacing. Currently have holes and leaks. This is a safety issue.
It was determined that our first step would be to address this issue during a meeting with the Principal and Athletic Director.
Gate sales from football games: Request 40% of gate sales from home games is given toward the football program. This ensures the upkeep of equipment and helps toward the annual awards banquet. A written agreement is encouraged.
At the present time, this is a non-issue. The High School has been very supportive to the needs of the Football team.
Track around the football field: The track around the football field needs to be opened. This helps with home field advantage to have supporting fans surrounding the football field. There is too much congestion between the home field stands and the concession/restrooms. Many supporters have complained about the burden and time it takes to maneuvering through the crowd.
It was determined; this issue needs to be addressed during a meeting with the Principal and Athletic Director.
Two football camps for seniors: One good camp to attend may be the "OFFENSE-DEFENSE INSTRUCTIONAL FOOTBALL CAMP". The main emphasis is that this camp is full contact and professional and collegiate coaches will provide instruction. This camp is in session once a year in Jacksonville. If coaches attend, their lodging, meals and attendance is free. The will stay in the same dorm and supervise our athletes. They can get involved with the student daily activities including setting up squads for scrimmages and drills.
Mike Mekara presented information on the "OFFENSE-DEFENSE INSTRUCTIONAL FOOTBALL CAMP" and the Bobby Bowden Football Camp at FSU. It was decided that certain camps may be too costly and there may be only a group of serious student-athletes. Coach Brown will inform the QB Club of his choices of camps.
At least one coaches clinic/camp: The clinic/camp not only teaches our coaches valuable skills, but also affords exposure for our athletes.
Recently, the coaches attended a clinic in Atlanta. Coach Brown stated that the clinic was very informative and beneficial. It was agreed that we would like to have the coaches participate in another clinic, (preferably the University of Florida’s Coaches Clinic). Mike Mekara had a sign-up form that was given to Coach Brown.
Football banquet (honor – players, coaches and announcers)
No discussion at this time.
Football jersey replacement for seniors: During the night of the banquet, award the seniors with their home jerseys.
Little discussion. Could get costly. Concern over seniors receiving jersey for playing just one season. A possibility would be to award the jersey to athletes who play at least three seasons. More discussion at a later date and we still need to plan funding for this item.
Field speakers: Is there a need to upgrade the speakers for The Pirate Field?
The plan is to install two speakers on the visitors’ side of the field.
Practice net for kickers: This should have already been completed. A follow up is needed.
Marshall will contact Hal about the status of this item.
Two more benches for players: A minimum of two more benches is needed.
It was agreed that the athletes need two more benches. Details for getting this accomplished will be discussed in the near future.
Cookout Thursday before final home game: This was a great success in 2004.
It was agreed that this would be done again in 2005.
Low-country boil Homecoming game: More exposure is needed, as a minimum through the "Nassau Neighbors" and the "News Leader". Larger portions are a must.
It was agreed that more exposure and larger portions are a must. Food preparation will be done at the field, (as it was done in 2003).
QB Club needs more exposure: Local newspapers can announce meetings, events and fundraisers. A thought would be to award a weekly Pirate Varsity MVP with a gift certificate. We may want to consider donations or sponsorships. We need to ensure, no matter what we do, that we get recognition through the local newspapers.
Tabled until next meeting.
New concession stand with restrooms on opposite side of field (operated by the QB Club): Establish a new concession stand with restrooms on the field, opposite from the current concession stand and restrooms. The establishment, funding, upkeep and staffing of this area will be the sole responsibility of the Quarterback Club. This new area will better satisfy the fan base and help with future needs of the Football team. With the athletes selling travel mugs every year, we could place a year on them, and offer free refills throughout the season, (the following season…we could charge a dollar for refills).
It was determined that our first step would be to address this issue during a meeting with the Principal and Athletic Director. If it is allowable, Mike Mekara will head this project.
Obtain corporate sponsorship: In exchange for donations, as a gift, we can hang 3 x 5 advertising signs along the fence around the Pirate Football Field, (the establishment, funding, upkeep will be the sole responsibility of the Quarterback Club). Another gift for their donations will be the placement of a full-page ad in the game program and our professional game announcers will further recognize their support during each home game. The intent is to gain stronger support through advertising, which will further assist with the betterment of our football team. A copy of a business letter is attached.
It was determined that our first step would be to address this issue during a meeting with the Principal and Athletic Director to ensure that we can signs along the fence. Mike Mekara will head this task.
QB Club needs By-Laws and a member directory. A directory needs to be placed on our web site.
Tabled until next meeting.
Establish Varsity Player meals prior to August 15: We need to schedule all weekly meals, either through sponsorship, churches or whomever. This needs to be done in advance and scheduled. One idea, (at least for home games), would be to utilize the same sponsor used for the QB Club meal.
It was agreed that the sponsor for the QB Club meal would also sponsor the athletes. A separate sponsor will be utilized for away game meals.
Establish and schedule home game meal sponsors prior to August 15: Businesses prefer to be scheduled in advance.
Covered under #20 above.
** AS FOR FUND-RAISERS: WE NEED TO DECIDE ON A FEW MAJOR FUND-RAISERS, AND STRIVE TO DO THEM EXTREMELY WELL. Repetition is the key, and patrons will learn when to expect our arrival. It is very hard to get money from businesses that are continually approached from other boosters. We look better if we approach them only once, (and they will appreciate it).
The following fund-raisers will be completed: Parking for shrimp festival along with selling refreshments, a yearly auction, the low-country boil and athletes conducting a "lift-a-thon". Other sources of income: Programs, sales from possible concession stand, gate-sales, corporate sponsorship, sales from travel mugs and discount cards.
