The vikings started in 1984, although Rugby League in Hoyland commenced in 1981 at Kirk Balk School.

Vikings are now based at the excellent facilities at Elsecar CC although up to 1996 they played at Kirk Balk and used a number of local pubs, notably The Welcome Inn.

Vikings started as a youth (U17) team but after one year added an open age section. They moved into The Pennine ARL in 1987.

The greatest moment came in 2001 when Vikings were not only promoted but won The SW Yorkshire Cup, narrowly beating Rotherham in the final. They have also won The Stan Hartshorn Memorial Trophy (U16); Pennine League Fair Play Award (2001); WR Youth League Club of the Year (2001); SW Yorkshire Sevens (1996).

The club has produced a number of professionals, notably Mitch Stringer(Sheffield Eagles, London Broncos and currently Salford City Reds), Danny Fearon (BARLA International, Halifax, Hunslet and others) and Nik Turnbull (Sheffield Eagles).

Several individuals have won awards: Steve Creek - Pennine League Player of the Year (the only person to win it twice); Dave Lodge (Pennine Clubman of the Year) and Cath Radford (Clubperson of the Year).

Steve Creek and Dave Lodge are the longest serving members with 20 and 17 years unbroken services. Both have over 400 appearances for the Vikings.

This last season Vikings were proud to be awarded the Sport England CLUBMARK award: the first club in South Yorkshire, amateur or professional. This certifies the club as providing good and safe practice.

This season has seen the Vikings achieve their greatest success so far in winning the South West Yorkshire Cup along With the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy after reaching th efinal for the first time ever.

Vikings run an open policy: EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT HOYLAND VIKINGS RLFC
