20/01/2007 VIKINGS 22 - 6 Hillsborough Hawks, SWY Cup Semi finals

Hoyland entertained Hillsborough in the semifinal of the South West Yorkshire Cup at Elsecar C.C. This is the first meeting of the clubs since 2004 when Hillsborough were relegated to division 4. Hillsborough now in Div 5 were no pushovers today though with some flair and determined play. The game started poorly for the Vikings with Hillsborough finding touch from the kick-off to give them head and feed at the scrum. After their first 4 tackles Hillsborough were no more than 10 yards further into the Vikings play when they kicked early which the Vikings took with ease. After four surging runs downfield, Stuart Jones opened the scoring for the Vikings with a great effort sending him over in the left corner. Ricci Whitham struggled against a strong wind and missed the conversion.

After a good exchange between Hillsborough and the Vikings the scores stayed the same until after 25 minutes, Kris Reekie collected a pass on the halfway line a showed a rare glimpse of speed to power his way over in the corner, again Whitham struggled and missed the conversion.

Next on the score sheet was Captain Sean Berry, After a quick play-the-ball from brother Gareth, Sean darted through 4 defenders to scramble over 10 yards wide of the posts. This time Whitham hit the mark making the half-time score 14 - 0 Vikings.

Again the Vikings took their time starting the second half and conceded an early try under the posts after some sloppy tackling allowed them to waltz in under the posts, The conversion was successful making the game a tighter 14 - 6.

For another 20 minutes the scores remained the same until again Sean berry broke the deadlock taking an inside ball 10 yards out he was never going to be stopped. Dave Parkin this time stepped up for the conversion but missed from out wide.

Last up on the score sheet was Gaz Davies with a fine effort ducking 1 player and carrying another over the line with him after 75 minutes of play. Captain Sean Berry attempted the wide conversion but again it was caught in the wind and drifted wide.

Hoyland now progress to the final for the second year running to defend their title against last years runners-up Rotherham Roosters after they Beat Grimethorpe in the other Semi-final.

09/12/2006 VIKINGS 22 - 10 Dodworth, SWY Cup Rnd 1

A great cup tie on the first real wintery afternoon of the year saw Hoyland lift their game to progress to the semi finals over a Dodworth side who made a strong contribution to the game but blew several chances in good positions.

After an end to end opening Vikings took the lead with quick hands creating a gap for Scott Hoyland to touchdown: Ricci Whitham added the goal. Not long after a play the ball 8 yards from the line saw hooker Kris Reekie send veteran Phil Hough in for a try under the posts, Whitham goaled.

Dodworth began to have more and more play and pulled a score back. With the interval approaching the visitors attacked again and attempted to open up the defence with a long ball which was brilliantly intercepted by Kiwi centre Brian Kindred who raced 70 yards for a try which gave Whitham the simplest of conversions.

After a strong period of sustained pressure at the start of the second half the visitors pulled back a converted try. Hoyland had then to defend desparately but firmly and on a rare forry up field Hough added his second try.

Dodworth are too good a side to just surrender and continued to press the home line to be rewarded with a try and a goal with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Play was delayed when a visiting player sustained a heavy knock and in added time the first division outfit threw themselves forward in a deparate effort to take the game to extra time. They were however thwarted by solid defence aided by a succession of handling errors as the Vikings clung on to a deserved and well earned victory to earn the right to travel to Sheffield Hillsborough in the semi finals.

Finally a word for veteran ref Kenny Tinsdale who despite the tightness of the game kept good control and let things flow.

04/11/2006 VIKINGS 30 - 18 Wyke

With the Vikings previous bad form out of the way they entertained Wyke, currently 2nd in division 3, in their 1st ever encounter. With both ‘A’ teams battling it out in the 6th division the time came for the both first team to lock horns.

Both sets of forwards attempted to dominate down the centre of the park but a well drilled Hoyland side took the game by the scruff of the neck and immediately made yardage.

Hoyland drew first blood with tries coming from Sean Berry and player coach Mitchell Stringer, Gareth Davies adding both conversions to give Hoyland a 12 – 0 lead.

Wyke replied after some good running and found themselves 5 metres from the Hoyland try line. A quick dummy from acting caught the defence offguard and the Wyke player scuttled over under the posts. Wyke’s winger was on target with the boot to narrow the scores to 12-6.

Hoyland still continued dominate however and Great lines from Sean Berry saw him bust the line and score from 30M out with Gareth Davies adding the conversion again. 18 – 6

Wyke again managed to cross the line on the 30 minute mark. Their Scrum half running across field looking for a gap and slipped a good grubber to the corner. Davies was caught on the back foot and his opposite winger gathered the ball first. Their winger lined up the conversion but the angle was too acute and the conversion was missed making the score 18 – 10 Vikings.

A Mitchell Stringer penalty extended Hoyland's dominance of the half to 20 -10 until after 35 minutes, Stringer was immediately dismissed from the field of play for retaliation. Wyke scored from the subsequent penalty but again missed the conversion.

Substitute winger Luke Robinson managed to cross the line after a great offload from Gareth Berry to show that the Vikings were not going to simply give up. Gareth Davies again goaled to bring the score to a more comfortable 26 – 10.

Wyke got their half on to the better start with the second rower busting the line and taking support, He offloaded and the supporting men had only fullback Sean Berry to beat, He drew him in but as always was hit by Sean, unfortunately he managed to make a pass before impact and the supporting player to dive over under the sticks. The conversion should have been a formality but the Wyke winger missed. Wyke were still were creeping up on the Vikings bringing the score to 26-14.

The second half saw a 12 man Hoyland now begin to struggle with Wykes extra man and they exploited the fact with good passing sending their winger over in the corner, once again the conversion attempt failed to hit the mark making it 26-18.

Ben Fairfax managed to cross the line for the Vikings only score of the second half and the last points of the game to secure a heroic 12 man win for the vikings.

28/10/2006 VIKINGS 29 - 6 Selby Warriors

The Vikings this week extended their winning streak to four games when they played Selby Warriors at the E.C.C. Selby, top of the table before their arrival took the Vikings close in their last encounter with only 3 points separating them at the final whistle.

The Vikings started poorly allowing the Selby player to run through 2 or 3 tacklers until he faced the might of Sean Berry and was brought to ground. This Kick started Hoylands performance and from then on there was no sign of losing.

Tries came from Scott Musgrave and Sean Berry in the first half with Gareth Davies adding both conversions. Highlight of the half was a successful centre spot penalty from Mitchell Stringer after a Selby kick-off landed in touch.

Excellent defensive work from the Vikings ensured that for the most part Selby were conatined and only crossed the Vikings 20M line 3 times.

Hoyland again took the game by the scruff of the neck and Substitute winger Luke Robinson grabbed 2 tries in quick succession after great offloads from Gareth Berry and Ben Fairfax. Mitchell Stringer converting one.

Next up was a fine 30M drop-goal from Stringer fro 20M left of the posts to give the vikings an extra cushion and retain the ball.

Selby eventually managed a converted try of their own from Martin Jackson, but it was quickly cancelled out by another fine effort from fullback Sean Berry to seal the game at 29 - 6, Selby's Heaviest defeat this year and the Vikings 2nd win over Selby from their 2nd encounter.
