19/05/2006 Tour Fixture, HOYLAND VIKINGS 58 - 14 XIII Bretagne Nantes (France)

On Friday a large crowd saw Vikings defeat a gallant if outplayed French touring side. The visitors threw the ball about in style but had little answer to the power and pace of the home side. Nevertheless the occasion proved a very special one and great entertainment for the spectators. The opening try came from Brian Kindred who swooped on a loose pass to score. Nick Turnbull added the goal. Next it was Turnbull's turn as the ex Sheffield Eagles forward powered through the defence after quick hands from a penalty. Turnbull converted his own try. A well worked move sent Gareth Berry over from a Kris Reekie pass and then Kindred again split the defence for a 40 yard run to the line. Turnbull's third goal made it 22-0. The French then had a better spell and played some attractive rugby with Christophe Labat and former Sheffield University student Barry McGuffog to the fore. However an interception and dummy pass saw Kindred complete his hat trick and on the stroke of half time a Nantes error saw veteran second team loose forward Mick Ellis pick up and plunge over. Turnbull goaled.

The score was 32-0 at the break.

The heavens opened at half time but the heavy rain did not spoil the atmosphere or free flow of the game. Kris Reekie set up Phil Hough on an unstoppable surge to the line: Turnbull added his 5th goal. However a clever move from the scrum finally saw Nantes score a deserved try and a goal, well received by the appreciative crowd. Quick passing sent in winger Luke Robinson and again Turnbull added the goal, this time from a difficult angle. When Robinson again received the ball a great hand off set him on a 40 yard burst for an unconverted try. From the restart Kindred gathered at charged 70 yards to finish with a spectacular sliding try but again the visitors attacked and a rare Hoyland error saw them gain another converted try. Before the end Kindred, with another interception, added his fifth try and Turnbull his 7th goal but the game finished with a neat try from the visitors with a clever inside pass to leave the final score 58-14. A feature of the game was the skilful refereeing of Chris Radford, former Hoyland half back now a Bradford Society Referee. After the game there was a very friendly and convivial atmosphere with exchange of gifts and souvenirs; a fish and chip supper and a selection of Breton wine and songs, both delivered with gusto.

01/05/2006 VIKINGS 36 - 8 Bank Top Harriers (ABM Trophy Final 2006)

The final started well for the Vikings with big hits in defence causing Bank Top to spill the ball all over the field. The first try of the day came from Phil Hough using superb handling and good feet to run-around Nick Turnbull and cross the line carrying two Bank Top players. Nick Turnbull missed the first conversion. Again the Vikings defence held tight and stopped Bank Top from crossing into their half. Phil grabbed the next score aswell with fine footwork from Hooker Kris Reekie sending Phil straight through a gap under the posts, This time Nick added the extras. Bank Top finally answered back after 3 penalties on the trot gave them the biggest gain they'd made into the Vikings half. A lucky bounce was collected by the BTH 11 and after being tackled By Luke Robinson he managed to offload to the supporting Centre who crossed the line way out wide with a good stretch of the arms, The BTH kicker missed the Goal attempt leaving the half-time score at 10 - 4 Vikings.

The Second half saw the Vikings come out of the blocks first with massive defensive hits and charging runs tearing the BTH line to pieces. Next up for a taste of the points was Brian Kinred. After setting off from the rook he stepped no less than 4 BTH players before stretching over the line just wide of the posts. Nick again added the goal. Phil Hough desperate to gain his hat-trick charged over the line again after another classic offload by Reekie. Nick added the extras once again o make the score a convincing 22 - 4 Lead to the Vikings. After being out matched for most of the game, BTH again struck down the left wing to send over their winger, The kick was missed. After a BTH injury with play being stopped, Gareth Berry crossed the line after what appeared to be a move gone wrong, But Gareth took the ball well and crossed the line untouched after confusing his own players nearly as much as BTH. Nick added the conversion to give the Vikings 28 - 8 lead. Next up was Gareth's brother Sean Berry who crossed the line after running an inch perfect line for Reekie to offload in the tackle and cross the line untouched by the BTH defence. Nick missed the conversion attempt this time. After a storming run from Winger Luke Robinson, Gareth Berry showed great strength and feet to cross the line for his second and secure the last points of the match as Nick again missed the wide conversion.

Phil Hough Gained the honourable Man-of-the-match award for his superb attacking presence and his hard earnt hat-trick.

01/04/2006 VIKINGS Vs. Selby Warriors (ABM Semi)

Hoyland Played Selby Warriors this week in the ABM semi final ( the furthest progression for Hoyland in this cup before)who came with a big physical side. Hoyland decided to change tactics his week and downsize the pack in order to field a stronger back setup. Hoyland were first to receive the ball and from Kick-off, Ben Fairfax made a charging run for the Vikings only to be brought down 10 yards short of the line. This storming first run should have set the pace for Hoyland but sadly it wasn't to be. Hoyland however did draw first blood with a fine try by Brian Kinred edging the Vikings into an early lead with Nick Turnbull Converting (6 - 0). Selby were next with their own try and conversion levelling the score (6 - 6). Hoyland answered with good hands seeing Phil Hough over the line giving the Vikings a slender lead (10 - 6). Selby, not to be outdone came back with another try to again tie the scores (10 - 10) just before the break. Early in the first Half Stuart Jones was blood binned with a broken nose after high tackle and Selby's 13 had to be carried off with Knee damage. The start of the second half saw Selby draw first blood but the kick was missed giving them only a 4 point lead (10 - 14). Hoyland were very slow to answer back with no score coming from either side until the last 15 minutes. Hoyland's Kiwi, Brian Kinred darted over the line under the sticks unchallenged and Nick Turnbull converted to give Hoyland a very slim Lead (16 - 14). Next on the Score sheet was Gareth Berry With a fine Drop-goal from 20 yards out to use up time and to widen the gap (17 - 14). With only 4 minutes left in the game, Selby put up a well placed kick only for Scott Hoyland to fumble and ground behind the line, A Selby player then grounded the ball to give Selby the lead with the conversion (17 - 20). With Only 40 seconds left in the game, Hoyland defence forced an error from Selby giving Hoyland the scrum 20 yards out. Quick hands to the wing and good Feet from Ben Fairfax crossed the whitewash to give the Vikings the lead with 20 seconds to go after Nick again added the Kick from out wide. 18/02/2006 Underbank Raiders 22 - 29 VIKINGS

Hoyland started the game going up the hill at Underbank on a very muddy pitch. The Vikings opened the scoring when Brian Kinred read the oppositions play well for a superb intercept to race 70 metres and score under the posts. Dave Parkin Duly added the extra's making it 0 - 6 to Hoyland. After 10 minutes of dominant play from Hoyland leaving them camped on Underbank line, underbanks 3 intercepted a wide pass to run the length of the field to score, their 9 added the conversion to make it 6 - 6. After Underbanks levelled the score, Hoyland heads went down with players not running the ball in with the passion of the previous 15. Underbank took the lead after good hands put their 6 over the line and 9 again added the kick. Underbanks then received a penalty under the posts after sloppy errors from Hoyland gave them 40 yards to make it 14 - 6.Hoyland number 13 Gareth Berry was then dismissed after 30 minutes of play for backchat leaving the Vikings with only 12 men and 6 point down, Underbanks 9 kicked the penalty awarded to make it 14 - 6. The Hoyland lads gelled after this and put in some great efforts both in attack and defence with Gaz Milburn, Dave Parkin and Gavin Buckton making great yards while stand-off Phil Hough and Full-back Sean Berry put in some monstrous hits. Hoyland managed to hold Underbank off for the next 10 to keep the score at 16 - 6 at half time. After a stern team-talk from coach Mitch Stringer, the Vikings started the second half with a new lease of life. Now going down the hill, Underbank found The Hoyland pack hard to contain with great ruck plays from hooker Kris Reekie seeing the line broken by the strong running forwards. The 20 minute dead-lock was broken when a great offload by Karl Pearce sent Brian Kinred over for his second of the day, Dave Parkin reduced the deficit to 4 points with the conversion. After another 10 minutes of play, Hooker Kris Reekie threw 3 dummies before crossing the line unchallenged from 5 yards out to bring the game level, Parkin added the goal to give Hoyland the lead once again. Next on the scoreboard for Hoyland was winger Stuart Jones, after a great precision kick from Scott Musgrave, Underbanks 2 fumbled the ball backwards in the in-goal to leave Stuart with nothing more to do than place a hand on the ball, this time Parkin missed the goal to make it 16 - 22 Vikings. More of the same from both defence and attack saw Karl Pearce cross the line for Hoyland after 70 minutes of play, Scott Hoyland this time kicked the goal to give Hoyland a more comfortable lead of 16 - 28. Great defensive work from Hoyland meant Underbank never entered Hoyland’s 30 yard line in the second half until 75 minutes of play when the number 3 scored out wide after good handling, 9 kicked the goal to make it 22 - 28. With only 4 minutes of play left the Vikings stand-off Phil Hough essentially ended Underbanks hopes with a drop-goal on the 5th tackle meant Underbank needed 2 scores in 3 minutes. The game finished 22 - 29 to the Vikings who showed that passion is more important than numbers.

11/02/2006 Rotherham Roosters 16 - 24 VIKINGS

The Vikings made their second trip to Wickersley high to face Rotherham this week after a previous defeat in the league. Hoyland received the ball first going uphill. After a disallowed try Rotherham got the first points with a well worked try out wide from their winger. Hoyland were quick to respond with Sean Berry sprinting half the field before scoring under the posts, Dave Parkin added the extras. The Hoyland pack dominated the game for the next 15 minutes with good strong running from props Gavin Buckton and Mark Slatter. Rotherham responded with another try and this time added the conversion to give them a 10 - 6 lead. Good offloads from the forwards and support from the backs saw Hoyland gain great field position throughout the next 10 but they were unable to cross the line with the Rotherham defence holding them back. The deadlock was broken before half-time by Ben Fairfax with another great individual run to score under the sticks, again Parkin kicked the goal to bring the score to 10 - 12 to the Vikings. The second half started much better for Hoyland who opened the scoring when Phil Hough sent winger Stuart Jones over out wide, this time the conversion was missed. Strong running and eagerness finally paid off for Hoyland when ex-pro Nick Turnbull crossed the line to give the Vikings a 10 - 20 lead. Rotherham answered with a good try from their 4 with the conversion bringing the score to 16 - 20. Neither team crossed the line again until, with only 4 minutes to go, Phil Hough passed wide to centre Brian Kinred to seal Rotherham's fate. The Vikings now progress to the last four of the ABM Trophy along with Undercliffe, the winners of the only other game played.

04/02/2006 Bank Top Harriers 30 - 22 VIKINGS

An under strength Hoyland faced Bank Top for the first time this season, having never previously met, neither team knew what to expect from the other. The game started poorly for the Vikings with Bank Top running in a try on the right wing after only 5 minutes of play. Hoyland then rapidly responded with Winger Luke Robinson gathering a BTH kick and sprinting half the field before being tackled, this gave Hoyland great field position and after 2 more plays Luke offloaded to centre Sean Berry to put him over for the Vikings first score. Parkin missed the goal. Great running from forwards Mark Slatter, Gav Buckton and Gaz Milburn saw Hoyland gain plenty of yards. Bank Top found Hooker Kris Reekie and Stand-off Phil Hough hard to contain with them giving superb offloads and spotting gaps in the line. Great link play from Gareth & Sean Berry saw Sean through a gap in defence to score his second of the day, this time Dave added the extras. Phil Hough scored yet another try to bring his total to 20 tries from 20 appearances with Parkin slotting the conversion over. Sean Berry completed his hat-trick before half-time to give Hoyland a 22 - 14 lead. Bank top came out fighting in the second half with Hoyland unable to cross the line for the entire half. Phil Hough broke the line only to spill the ball 2 yards short, and mark Slatter gathered a loose ball and had a free run at the line only for the referee to call a knock on against BTH. Stuart Jones had a good performance on his re-entry to the first team with some strong running and good solid tackling. Nick Turnbull also playing his re-entry game after playing professionally for Sheffield eagles for the last 3 years, Had a good first half with strong running and superb offloads but fitness showed in the second half after playing no games since September

The Next Hoyland score came from Centre Ben Fairfax with a great offload from Dave Parkin seeing him over on the right touchline. The Second half started much the same as the first with Lindley racking up 2 unanswered tries before winger Luke Robinson Scoring a well worked try from another superb offload by Gareth Berry. Hoyland again failed to retain possession from the kick-off with the ball going into touch. after 65 minutes of play, Full-back Sean Berry scored a near length-of-field try whilst the rest of the team were caught up in a slight disagreement. The referee dismissed 2 Lindley players for fighting and the game continued with tempers running high. After a tense warm-up The Vikings received the kick-off to make good yards up field on the first set of six. The Vikings were running hard and tackling well until a sloppy error let Rotherham open the scoring making it 6 - 0. With the pressure now on, Hoyland fought back hard and were unlucky not to score after good hands and hard running brought them within Rotherham’s 10 yard line. The second half got off to much the same start with Hoyland tackling well and running hard at the Rotherham line. Hoyland duly received their pay-off for the hard work when Brian Kinred crashed over after taking a high-ball, Dave Parkin Converted. Rotherham kicked-off only for Hoyland's winger to be forced into touch, losing any pressure they had previously built up. 17/12/2005 DEARNE VALLEY BULLDOGS 18 - 22 VIKINGS

The Vikings poured their heart and souls into this game to hand Dearne Valley only their second defeat of the season. From the first play the Vikings knew it was going to be a hard game with the referee awarding a penalty to DVB from 5 yards out. This set the tone for the rest of the game and the Vikings expected nothing less than 13 Vs. 14. The Viking pack then dominated the game for 10 - 15 minutes with hard running from Gavin Buckton, Gaz Milburn and newly upgraded forward Luke Robinson. This hard running determination from the pack saw Hoyland Twice break the line to score only to twice have the tries disallowed by the referee. Eventually The referee had no choice but to award Phil Hough the try Hoyland had now worked three times to secure, Scott Hoyland added the extras. The game then fired up to volcanic proportions with neither team willing to be beaten, solid running from the entire Hoyland pack and great back-up work from the back line saw some great offloads from the team and the DVB line broke countless times. The scoreline was 18 - 18 for the last 10 minutes of the game with neither side able to find a gap in the others defence. Hoyland bided their time and went for the drop-goal with little more than 2 minutes left, only for it to be well blocked by the rushing DVB defence. The Vikings regathered the ball from the block and played out another set camped on the DVB line and on the 5th tackle the Vikings No.6 Phil Hough put in a bursting run to stampede over the line and give the Viking’s their biggest win of the season. DVB's Man-Of-The-Match went to hat-trick hero Mr Hough. The Vikings have now secured their place in the final of the SWY cup and are to face Rotherham after they beat Dodworth 20 - 21.

Goals: - Scott Hoyland 3

10/12/2005 VIKINGS 62 HOLLINWOOD 6

Vikings hosted Hollinwood for the teams second encounter of the year and would take nothing less than a win from the game. Hollinwood turned out short but were helped out by the Hoyland 2nd's (A little too well may I add). Tries came flooding in for the Hoyland lads with Gareth Davies opening with a superb effort out wide, his first of 5.The Hollinwood pack worked well to contain the Vikings for short periods but their weaknesses began to show when the Vikings showed off some new found talents, offloading in the tackle and confusing defender's with newly established moves. The game unfortunately was ended 12 minutes early when a Hoyland 2nd team player (Playing in Hollinwood colours) tore the tendon in his ankle and had to be stretchered off.

Tries: - Gareth Davies 5, Phil Hough, Kris Reekie, Sean Berry, Scott Hoyland, Gavin Buckton, Chris Sewell

08/10/2005 VIKINGS 0 MORLEY BOROUGH 16

The Vikings suffered their first home defeat of the season to a well prepared Morley. Both teams defence was outstanding throughout the game with very few breaks from either team. The game ended with a questionable decision from a Morley touch judge ruling that Hoyland’s winger was in touch, With the referee having no clear view of the incident the try was not awarded.
