    Commanders Message

Our Chapter was well represented at the Department of State Convention at Crystal River at the Plantation Inn, by Joe Manna. Seven Purple Heart recipients were honored as were eleven nominees for the Eddie Ko award including our own Ted Czerwinski. Chapter Presidents or their Representatives gave three minute overviews of their Chapter activities. The Convention was a success with eighty eight people participation in the banquet. President Jim Bradford stated that DOF has a Code of Ethics and we intend to publish it in a future issue.

Despite the fact that many of our members have headed north for the summer, we had a good turn out at our last Chapter meeting. We welcomed Earl Blackburn who has returned and we hope that he will continue to participate in our activities. We also welcomed two guests; Jim Jensen and Nancy Needham, who hopefully will soon become members.

Former Commander and Member, Bill Field announced that he is now running for Commander of Chapter 24, where we hold our meetings and other events. The Legion has signed a contract with Game Co., an organization that will install games of chance, with a percentage of the profits going to hopefully alleviate the problem.

Former Commander, Member and now DOF Third Vice Commander, Gene Gillette brought up the subject of our Chapter developing an Honor Guard that will be trained to participate in funerals if requested by the families of departed Korea War Veterans. After a short discussion it we decided to bring this matter up to the E-board to determine whether or not we can recruit enough members to fulfill this obligation.

Although our next State Convention will not occur until May, 2010 plans are now being made. Bob Burgess and Joe Manna have already contacted one hotel and they and I have two appointments this week to get more details and perhaps get ready to close the deal with one of the facilities. It will be necessary for DOF Officers to actually sign the final contract. Since our Chapter has already committed to host this Convention, we are asking that all members be willing to share some of the responsibility in any way that they can. This Convention should be a special one because the sixtieth anniversary of the beginning of the Korea War will take place on June 25, 2010. Much more will be covered at future meetings and in future Viewpoints on this matter.

We are coming closer to fulfilling our obligations to become "compliant" with all regulations of the National Association. Today I received an application for our required $1,000,000 Liability insurance. Cost $127.03. "Check's in the mail". I'll keep you posted.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

GOD BLESS AMERICA

Did you know you can survive and even grow from conflict? You may never like it much. I¡¦d seriously worry about you if you did, but there¡¦s no point in trying to avoid it. Conflict is a part of life. We¡¦re fragile and we all have feelings. We¡¦re regularly hurting each other and trying to forgive one another and trying to get over some things. Maybe we¡¦re learning together. Maybe with each conflict we¡¦re becoming more compassionate. This is my hope and my prayer for you, for me and for all of us.

REMEMBER AND PRAY FOR

Those who are sick around us

VA Begins Accepting Applications for Post 9/11 GI Bill Benefits

WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today that Veterans can begin submitting applications on-line for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. “There is no better investment than education,” Assist. Secretary Tammy Duckworth of the Department of Veterans Affairs for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs said. “The Post 9/11 GI Bill will provide new opportunities that are essential to our Veterans, our workforce and our economy.”

Veterans, service members, reservists, and National Guard members with active duty service since September 10, 2001 may be eligible for this benefit. Veterans will remain eligible for benefits for 15 years from the date of last discharge or release from a period of active duty of at least 90 continuous days.

Eligible applicants must have served for an aggregate period of at least 90 days after September 10, 2001, or served at least 30 continuous days on active duty since September 10, 2001 and received a discharge for disability. Benefit payment rates range from 40% of the maximum benefit for an individual with at least 90 days, but less than 6 months of aggregate service and up to 100% of the benefit for individuals with at least 36 months of aggregate service or 30 continuous days and a discharge due to a service connected disability. Prospective beneficiaries may apply on-line at www.GIBILL.VA.gov.

Qualified Veterans will receive a “Certificate of Eligibility” as well as additional information regarding benefits they may qualify for under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, which will become effective on August 1, 2009.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill, passed by Congress last year, is the most extensive educational assistance program authorized since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. It provides eligible applicants with tuition payments to assist them in obtaining a college education. For many participants, it also provides a housing allowance and a stipend for books and supplies. Information about the new program and VA’s other educational benefits can be obtained through www.GIBILL.VA.gov or by calling 1-888-GIBILL1 (1-888-442-4551).

WASHINGTON - Yesterday, the Department of Veterans Affairs Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, L. Tammy Duckworth, was honored by Running Start at their annual Women to Watch Awards in Washington, DC. She spoke to a crowd of 300 young women at a ceremony at the National Press Club.

"We make our Nation stronger by supporting the 200,000 women currently serving in the armed forces and the approximately 1.7 million women

Veterans in our country that need our help," Assistant Secretary L. Tammy Duckworth said. "It's time to stop being surprised that America's daughters are fully capable of doing their jobs and fighting for our freedoms. I recognize that I am here today because I stand on the shoulders of the men and women who opened the doors for women to serve."
