| ESSAY
Through electronic music festivals, different aesthetic approaches are used for the emerging digital culture. These festivals look beyond the walls of schools or styles and focus on presenting leading edge digital works based solely on their quality. Robotics, digital imaging and a broad range of types of music from electro acoustic to electronica share the stage. These concerts attract many genres within the realms of Space, Ambient, Electronic and Ethereal music. The goal is to bring interesting and challenging music to the communities. The four festivals I researched included samples of light shows, music, artist info and video clips.
The first festival we’ll look at is called ELEKTRA, performed in Montreal, Canada. At the ELEKTRA festival a duo called Granular Synthesis (Kurt Hentschlaeger and Ulf Langheinrich) produces a theatrical performance with technical and creative accomplishments. The show is displayed through a surround-sound and twelve giant screens set as a circle. The spectators are immersed in a sensory whirlpool of images and sound. Also at ELEKTRA, the performance of “Bulbes” leads to the exploration of sound and image by means of a device composed of 64 giant light bulbs. “Bulbes” is also a MIDI instrument that offers true-to-life concert made performances. Acoustic resonance and light schemes echo from the device. One other performer at ELEKTRA creates a funky creation as he amplifies household appliances and sound sculptures which are activated by a series of software applications controlled by means of a Theremin adapted for compatibility with MIDI technology. The next festival is THE GATHERINGS festival, held at the University of Pennsylvania. Ian Boddy is one of the many artists that performed there. Boddy established the label DIN and his main aims was to provide a label which could provide a bridge between the analogue sound of the early 70's synth pioneers and the digital soundscapes of the more experimental modern exponents of electronic music. The GATHERINGS has a range of innovative artists through the sounds of techno-tribal journeys, multi-layered melodies, floating space music and ambient chamber music. The concerts are held in the church sanctuary of St. Mary’s Hamilton Village on the campus, a serene space ideal for experiencing atmospheric sounds of spontaneous creation. The EARATIONAL festival is performed in Amsterdam. These artists are from around the globe and come to this festival to share their passion and talent for electronic music. This festival is a combination of electronic music and audio art. The music consists of a wide range of compositions of randomness, spontaneous sounds, and electronically manipulated and digitally warped voices sounds, to techno to ambient music. LES SIESTES is a festival held in Toulouse, France. This festival is more laid back compared to the previous festivals mentioned. At this festival, one can enjoy and relax outside at your own pace. One of the many artists that performed there is Murcof, a Mexican artist. Murcof uses classical music elements with minimal-tech house beats and experimental textures. After researching for this project I realized the continuing impact of how technology is enhancing and inventing a new genre for music and art. Many styles and many new techniques can be widely seen at any of these festivals and many more. It is well worth researching and/or experiencing an electronic festival to learn more of where technology is going today with combination of sound and image. The vibrant colors from the Granular Synthesis at Elektra brings imagination to the stage. The tedious set up of the Bulbes performance at Elektra is appreciated by the glow of the room and subtle sounds of the bulbs displayed. A variety of sounds consume the Erational festival while one can relax and soak up the sun at the Les Siestes festival in Toulousse. | |||||||||||||||
