The Veterans Council meets on the third Thursday of each month except Dec at the parish hall of Christ Episcopal Church 4030 Manatee Ave W.

  Veterans Council Mission Statment      

The Manatee County Veterans Coucil is a not for profit veterans organization that is a coalition of independent veterans organizations and their auxiliaries united for the following purposes:

To Promote public services and activities honoring veterans on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and other patriotic holidays at Veterans Park.

To forster fraternal relations amongst all veterans organizations, their auxiliaries, and other patriotic groups.

To create and maintain a greater public awareness and interest in veterans service to the community, state, and nation.

To select and publicly recognize a "Manatee County Veteran of the Year" and "Auxiliary Member of the year"

To provide a forum for the identification and discussion of issues and actions that impact veterans and their families.

To inform veterans and their families of those matters affecting veterans on the federal, state, an local levels.

To be a local non-participating forum for the florida department of veterans affairs.

Minutes of August Meeting


Call to Order & Pledge:

Vice Chairman Field

Invocation: Chaplain Eldridge

Introduction of Guest's: Kristin Minor & Jerry Koontz

Treasurer's Report: Balance $1,933.52, copy attached.

Secretary's Report: Minutes of 17 Jul 08 approved as distributed.

Committee Reports:

(1) Sarasota Cemetery: Courtney - Next meeting 2PM 9-15-08 at Sarasota City Hall.

(2) Veterans Day Parade: Field - Two meetings, parade will be in Palmetto with a barbeque at VFW 2488 to follow on 11-8-08. Requested funds. VFW 10141 gave a check for $200.00 and VFW 12055 & SAL Sq 24 volunteered funds.

(3) Veterans Week Luncheon: Greene introduced Jerry Koontz who invited all to the luncheon at Kiwanis Hall at noon 11-4-08.

(4) VETS Program: Brunette spoke of need for more volunteers from more groups to visit schools. Mentioned two on current schedule.

(5) Veteran & Auxiliary of the Year: Chair appointed Clinesmith, Valley & Sheffield and stated cutoff would be beginning of 9-18-08 MCVC meeting.

New Business:

Motion Greene, and Seconded that the MCVC contribute $175.00 to the Manatee County Historical Park for awards for the 2008 History Fair. Passed

Around the Table:

(1) Request for letters regarding need for present level, three, Manatee County Service Officers to Manatee County Commission. A new office location on Old 301 is possible.

(2) AL 325 still has no post home and may not re-charter in 2009.

(3) Reminder of “Freedom Flight” to take WWII veterans to see WWII Memorial in Wash, DC. Check “Google” for info.

(4) AL Post 30 now has a new post home in Sarasota.

(5) AMVETS 301 A 6 Sep cook-off to benefit “Our Daily Bread”.

(6) Elks Dist 6 doing a party for Bay Pines residents 6 Nov at noon.

(7) AL 24 Candle light service at 7PM on 11 Sep; POW-MIA service at 7PM on 18 Sep.

(8) VFW 10141 Picnic on 1 Sep; A 11 Sep Memorial Service at 11 AM; POW-MIA program on 21 Sep at 5PM; Party for Bay Pines veterans 25 Oct.

COUNCIL CHAPTER NEWS

The Elks lodge of So.West district will hold their annual Veterans day barbecue at Bay Pines hospital Sunday Nov 9, 2008 @ noon. We expect to serve approx. 200 veterans and their families. All Vets are welcome. Entertainment will be provided

There will be a memorial service at 7:00 PM on Septermber 11th, to observe the anniversary of that tragic day.

A candlelight ceremony will be held in honor of all those who sacrificed that day.
