Recognizing the positive impact that a solid educational foundation and nurturing environment have on a child, the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida A & M University National Alumni Association officially formed a partnership with Holmes Elementary School by selecting it as the first school in their Adopt-A-School Project.
The goals of the project are to motivate children to read by involving them in reading as a pleasurable, entertaining activity; to provide a meaningful experience with language used in books and expand vocabulary while improving listening and reading comprehension.
Holmes, located in the inner-city and so-called “disadvantaged” section of Miami, was selected for many reasons. One of them being the dynamic leadership of then principal, Dr. Steve Gallon, III.
A product of the same neighborhood, Gallon, also a FAMU grad, instilled in the faculty, students and parents, a sense of pride and expectation of excellence from all members of the Holmes Elementary Family. The Miami-Dade Chapter shares the commitment to excellence and belief that all children can learn.
