Mu State President's Message

Come Join the BLOCK PARTY at Fall Workshop,Sept 24-25, 2010
Coming to the Workshop? Like to win Door Prizes?
You can be eligible for the BLOCK PARTY!
All you need to do is register for a room in our block and stay at the Marriott for our meeting. We have a block of rooms at the Orlando Airport Marriott Hotel, so ask for DKG rate when you make your reservation for the Fall Workshop. The deadline for hotel reservations is Sept 2, 2010.

All of our meeting space and breakout rooms for workshop sessions are provided on a complimentary basis, if we meet our "block of rooms" at the hotel and meet our minimum contract for food and beverages. When you register for our block of rooms and stay there, you help to make that all possible.

Every member who stays in our block will be eligible for the drawing for door prizes at the luncheon on Saturday. If you check in on Thursday, or stay over on Saturday, you will receive an extra entry in the drawings, since these dates count for us also. When you pick up your registration packet, you will receive your entry to place in the drawing.
Come help us fill our "block" along with some extra fun!

Congratulations, Dr. Beverly Helms!!

Everyone in Mu state knows and loves Beverly Helms: As the Myers-Briggs Guru, parliamentary authority and encourager in our Leadership Seminar;
As the past –president who inspired us and instituted our Hall of Fame to give honor to others;
As Editor of the Florida Rays who captures the best in pictures and news of members;
As State Parliamentarian, to help us stay on track as we move forward;
As “Queen Bee” of the International Communications Committee who challenged and showed us the way to “create a buzz” ;
As a good friend and positive supporter of members .

It is a great pleasure for all of Florida to celebrate with Beverly as the 2010 recipient of the International Achievement Award and in her new role as International Second Vice President. We in Mu State are pleased for you, Beverly and very proud that you are one of us!

Dr. Carolyn Rant, International Past-President acknowledging Dr. Beverly Helms

Special Honor for Peggy DuBose

Peggy, member of Beta Nu, received recognition as Florida’s “Star of the Southeast” during the Southeast Region Breakfast at our International Convention in Spokane. Each state in the southeast recognizes one member who truly makes a difference in her state on a continuing basis without seeking the limelight for herself. Here is the presentation given about Peggy:

Florida recognizes and honors a member who was initiated in 1981. She has been chapter president, served on various committees, and has been chapter treasurer for over 25 years. Her service to Mu State includes two terms each as Chair of Emergency Relief and Mu State Directory. She has been Corresponding Secretary, Research Chair, and a member of Finance, Bylaws, and Personal Growth and Services committees. She was meeting registrar for two state presidents. She has attended Mu State Leadership/Growth Seminar, served as District Director and is a member of Mu State Hall of Fame. She sings in state and international convention choruses. A Red Cross trainer for Water Safety, CPR and First Aid, she was recognized by the school board for performing emergency CPR to help save the life of a student.

As one state president said, “She doesn’t seek the limelight but is one of those rare individuals who is willing to do everything she can, to make others look even better. “ Florida’s Star--- Peggy DuBose

Mu State Acknowledged at the 2010 Convention

August 10, 2010

Dear President Pridgen and MU State Organization members:

So much transpired at our recent 2010 convention in Spokane! I am still reflecting on the business covered, the excellent speakers and workshops, and the interaction with so many wonderful women from across the world. MU State members certainly were front and center in the activities and the recognition, especially that of our newest Achievement Award recipient, Beverly Helms! All of us in the Southeast Region rejoice with you in celebrating her well deserved selection! Many MU State delegates led and participated in presentations throughout the week and contributed much toward realizing the vision of President Rants throughout the biennium and the convention. Take pride in your accomplishments and spread the news of this most successful convention to all of your chapters and members.

As Elizabeth Garner takes over as your Southeast Regional Director, I extend a hearty thanks to all of the MU State members for your support throughout this past biennium. Your attendance and willingness to take on responsibilities at our Southeast Regional Conference in Little Rock showed your commitment and eagerness to "Activate The Vision" throughout the region and beyond. I know Elizabeth will experience that same support as she works with you in planning the Louisville conference for 2011.

Thank you also for your generosity in gifting me with the beautiful Award Concept's "Founders Ring" at the Southeast Breakfast in Spokane. You truly touched me. The ring is a tangible reminder of the two wonderful years I have had serving you and the Society as your Southeast Regional Director. I wear it with pride because for me it symbolizes all of the members from throughout the Southeast region.

With a new biennium there will be more challenges, more opportunities to serve and more experiences for all of us. I know you will join me in supporting newly elected International President Jensi Souders as she leads us toward “Embracing Our Vision" – Designing Our Future” over the next two years. She envisions our being even stronger at the end of this biennium than we are now by focusing on educational excellence, increasing diversity among members and concentrating on our chapters, the backbone of the Society. There is indeed so much for all of us to embrace!

In service to DKG,

Cathy

What is Delta Kappa Gamma?

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an international honorary society with over 103,000 key women educators in seventeen countries.

The Society was founded on May 11, 1929 in Austin, Texas, to promote equal status for women, to work for school legislation, and to provide financial assistance for women in their educational careers. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, a member of the faculty of the University of Texas and a former state superintendent of public instruction, led twelve women educators in the founding of the society. They chose the name of the society based upon the initial letters of three Greek words meaning key women teachers.

Our Mission Statement
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

The Society's Seven Purposes
1. To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship.
2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education.
3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education.
4. To initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators.
5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators.
6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action.
7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.

The Society's Three Symbols
The crest or coat of arms is often printed on Society publications. The top portion of the crest represents leadership. The cup of knowledge and the laurel wreath representing achievement are also found on the key pin. The torse below the laurel wreath on the crest represents inspiration. The lamp of learning, the rose, and a book are found on the crest. Finally, the name of the Society, in Greek, completes the crest.

The keypin is given to each member upon initiation. It is the emblem of Society membership and is worn only over the heart. No other pin, piece of jewelry, or name tag may be worn above it. It is not to be worn pinned to scarves or on collars. Upon resignation or other situations which results in non-membership, the pin should no longer be worn.

The red rose is the official flower of the Society and is used in all ceremonies and for special occasions.
