Another Mini Reunion with Lynn Allieri and Gretchen Matzke

SAVE-THE-DATE

APRIL 4, 2011 FOR A 5 DAY CRUISE TO CELEBRATE OUR 45th REUNION. FINAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE BEING MADE TO SET UP A GROUP RATE. JEFF SMITH

Check out under the milestones heading on the homepage below the newest grandchild of the class of 66. Lynn Allieri Bixler and her husband Ken are the proud grandparents of grandaughter Isabella Rex Bixler. Congratulations Lynn and Ken.

For those of you who are Perry Junior High School graduates, Lynn asked me to post the following announcement.

Dear Peg,
This morning I was informed that my oldest friend, Sally Worthington Esber, passed away last night, Mar 24, 2009. Sally and I had known each other almost 50 years, as we were in Girl Scouts together while still in grade school. She lived on the other side of Davie Blvd and went to Parkway. Sally enrolled in Nova with us in 1964 but decided after one year it just wasn't her cup of tea. She was really smart but not necessarily educationally motivated! :) Anyway, she tranferred to Stranahan and graduated in 1966 also. I believe she then attended Florida Atlantic and graduated in 3 years during which time she met and married the love of her life, Jon Esber.

They spent a few early years with Jon in the Army and then settled in Dallas and have lived there ever since. Jon is a successful pathologist at a Dallas hospital. They chose never to have children but Sally spent many years caring for her mother, an aunt, both of Jon's parents and numerous loveable canine pets. Luckily, they had the funding and desire to travel extensively and I know lived their life together to the fullest.

Recently "found" classmate Barry Friedlander wrote to Lynn today letting her know his uncle and our Math Department Head, Mr. Burt Kaufman, passed away in July 2007. His name has been added in memoriam to this site.

In Sympathy

Fred Scheidler's wife writes to tell that another classmate has died. Our sympathy and best wishes go out to Fred's widow Carol and his family.

Dear Lynn,
I wanted to let you know about the death of one of your classmates. Although he did make it to the fabled 60 years, my husband, Fred Scheidler, class of 66, died July 15 of this year. They discovered that he had suffered for years from pulmonary fibrosis and by the time we noticed significant symptoms, it was too late even for symptomatic care. He was very proud of having been in the first class at Nova and credits the school with much of his success in later years. I hope you will all remember him at your next reunion and have a good time for him.
Thank you,
Carol Scheidler

Brief Trip to Vermont

Peg Dunn-Snow took a brief trip to Vermont this month ( July 2008) and was able to spend a day with classmate Kate Kennedy Butler in Glover, Vemont. Below are pictures of Kate's gardens as part of her nursey. A living picture postcard.

Update from
Rick Price

Sorry I did not get to see everyone at the reunion last July. As you probably heard I had to go to Brazil on a pop up trip. Can’t wait until next spring to get life back under “my” control (retirement) or so I think!

Any way, just a short note so that you can change my email address on the master roster to armavia@sbcglobal.net .

We have bought property on Lake Chickamuga just north of Chattanooga, TN to retire on next year and hopefully the sbcglobal account will transfer there with AT&T’s purchase of BellSouth. I really dislike changing email address’s because I seem to always forget to notify the right people.

I have had two mini reunions with Bill and Linda Napier in Charlotte since the reunion and it was like we never lost contact soooooo…. Amazing. We had not seen each other since the late 60’s. I can only guess how the 40th was to meet and greet old friends again. Hope to be at the 45th, God willing. Take care and the best to you and yours.

Hello one and all,

A note from a long-lost alumni. I just happen to be fooling around on the internet and discovered this great site. I am happy to say that I am alive and kicking and living in DC.

I left Florida finally a year ago to follow my one and only daughter, Samantha, to the great Washington, DC area. She is in pre-med at Georgetown and I couldn't live without her. I am working as an assistant for a former Ambassador at the RAND Corporation and enjoying every minute.

I still keep in touch with Clara (Rogers) Lynch...she being the better friend by keeping in touch with me on a regular basis. My life since high school was pretty boring until my daughter was born, 25 years ago. She is the one and only highlight of my life. She did an excellent job of raising me and I miss all those days I spent with her as a child.

But she is a wonderful grown up and still excels in everything she does. She graduated high school two years early, graduated Rollins College at 20 with honors and spent a few years working in DC and is now back in school for medicine. We are sharing an apartment to save on expenses and I intend to follow here wherever she goes.

I'm still the animal lover. We have one cat, a boxer and a 19 year old Bishon Frise. All rescues! I just lost my Mom this year. She was my rock and finally left me at 88. My best to all of you and my congratulations if you remember me! I wish you all the best! Love...

Happy New Year

A few notes from the website administer.

1/18/07

The Nova Class of 1967 Reunion Committee is busy finding classmates for their 40th reunion this summer. Because some of their classmates were sibs of ours they are helping us with our missing classmates list too.
Sadly, Bernice McLacklan has been added to our Memoriam List at the bottom of our homepage site. She died of breast cancer at the age of 35. On a happier note, other classmates we may has a lead on are Tom Schott and Garry Grau.
Also please check out Kate Kennedy Butler's flash page added to the links section. In the near future Kate will have a full website to link to our site.

Candace Wright Sheelan, Class of 67 sends warm wishes to all

I hope our reunion in June 07 at the Yankee Clipper (June 29 - July 1)is as much fun as yours seems to have been! What a great looking group you are!

Candy Wright Walton Sheehan class of 67 (single & living in Atlanta again)

Classmate "Found"

This morning Joan ( Crain) Flynn found the website and contacted me. She hopes to attend a future reunion.
Peg

Michael Newton sent in a picture from the past as well as a current photo that has been posted under his mini-profile. Hope you will make plans to come to the 45th reunion

Trip to Vermont

Tom and I just came back from a vacation in Vermont (Note: Peg spent two summers in Vermont going to school). We stayed with Kate Kennedy Butler so I guess that counts as another mini-reunion.

Kate was too modest to write in the Focus book about her home and nursey but this is a classmate who is literally on the map. If you pick up an Atlas Map of Vermont, Kate's place is listed as a point of interest! Below are a few pictures from our trip.

It has just been over a month and all the reunion pictures have not been posted on the website, and yet there has already been a mini-reunion in Atlanta.

Nicki Hullis Aronson write:

Hi,
Bob Denham arranged this get together last week. It was fun. I think it just goes to show you how successful the reunion really was - leaving everyone wanting more.

Thank You Emails from Classmates

I am so glad the reunion went well and still sorry that I couldn't make it.

Thanks for the "focus" book you sent out, it is really interesting to see everyone's comments. It was ingenious to send out a questionnaire vs. simply asking everyone to recap their lives as it gives a structure so each person gives the same info but shows how each individual has spent the last 40 years. It is a great read...I'm still not done as I got it just two days ago when I returned from my most recent trip.

Linda Ruffin Goldser

Dear Peggy,

Sorry I missed all the fun. I aggrevated a back condition and driving seemed impossible that weekend. Congrats to the committee.

Carolyn ( Cox Gardner)

Hi Peg,

Thanks again for all your work on the reunion. It couldn't and wouldn't have happened without you and Jeff and Lynn and ...

Teresa and I had fun. Many (most) people I hadn't seen for the forty years since high school, and it was good to reconnect with them.

Regards, Ken

Peggy,

Sorry I couldn’t attend the reunion, but I have perused and scoured the pictures and commentary. Just like all the others we remember the past and move on with the future. None of us have ever shunned adventure and experience. This was truly a class that met the future undaunted and with spirit to spare. I enjoyed reminiscing vicariously with the hope that I will be able to attend the next reunion—5 or 10 years hence.

Our family is facing new challenges with my husband taking a position in New York as a Surgical Oncologist and my remaining as a bi-coastal wife here in Mobile, Alabama for the time being. My heart is still with the class of 1966 and hats off to your reunion.

Nova High we sing thy praise!! Please send this out to everyone on the web site.

Martha Slater LoCicero, MD

Hello Peg and Lynn,

I received the Nova Focus today and just wanted to thank you folks for everything. Sorry I could not make it to the reunion, but thanks for including me in this mailing. I hope you stay in touch and maybe we will see you at the 45th.

Joe Zimmerman

Dear Peggy,

I would like to thank you once again for all the work you did in helping organize the reunion. I had a great time and really appreciate your efforts.

Best wishes,
Lee Dugan

Hi to All,

I hit the floor running after our reunion. It was back to real life and putting out small fires! I’m sure you all know what I mean.
I just wanted to drop a note and say thank you for a wonderful event. The reunion was amazing! Thank you for all your planning and hard work. The fruit of your labor was amazing. The spirit of hospitality was in the air. I think everyone had a wonderful time, I know I did.
It was great to see all of you,

Fondly,
cookie

Jeff,

Following the reunion I traveled to Dallas to meet my new grandson and am just now finding the time to thank you and all your "helpers" for the wonderful 40th reunion!
Jim and I had a fabulous time! We were so impressed with all the little extra touches and great organization that obviously took place to put on such a successful event.
Lynn's "class profile" was fascinating and sobering. Any chance of getting a copy to reread and digest more fully?
It was great to remember past friendships and events as we traveled our turbulent and growth-filled teenage years together. Old friendships were rekindled and new friends made as we met spouses and significant others. Having a photographer there to record this moment in time for us as couples and classmates was a great idea.
I also loved the Nova article and classmate info sheet. Thanks to all of you who made the effort to be there and to those who worked so hard for so long to both organize the event and find all of us! We are certainly thankful to the internet for expediting the later.
Is there a central person collecting photos that might be shared through the internet with all of us? A lot of good ones were taken but unfortunately we won't get to see them otherwise.
I vote to do this again in 5 years instead of ten and agree with those voting to nix Jeff's idea of a class hunting trip. Sorry, Jeff, I hate bugs. Thank you all for a wonderful time - we wouldn't have missed it.
To those who were unable to attend, you missed a memorable event and we hope to see you in five years!

Fondest regards,
Kim (Smernis) Strong

I wanted to thank all of you involved in the reunion. Everyone I talked to,myself included,(I seem to be doing a lot of that with advancing years),noted how well it was done and the extraordinary amount of organizational skill and effort it took to pull this off as well as it done. You should all get a gold star and a discrete word in the ear of the saint of selfless and dedicated effort on behalf of others. Thanks again for a job EXTREMELY WELL DONE.

Michael L. Robbins

ps Lynn, any chance of obtaining a copy of the speech you made on the survey results?

Jeff & Trish--

We had a wonderful time at the reunion. It was fun to meet some of David's "old" classmates & listen to tales of the good "old" days. Obviously, there is still a lot of spirit left in the Nova High Class of '66! Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to get these folks together again. Looking forward to the 45th!

June (and Dave Murray)

hi gang, what a nice time paul and i had at the party. we really appreciate all of you who came back to town to celebrate another milestone. paul and i work right here in pompano teaching bridge and running bridge games. i give lessons on monday night and you are welcome to join us at anytime. for those of you out of town i even give bridge lessons on the internet. so no excuses. i hope to find more of our classmates playing bridge by our next get together. thanks for all your work and donations. jeanni and paul

Dear Peg

I’m happy that you all could find a good use for the old window decal. I don’t even know if they still make them like that, but too many cars have tinted windows where they don’t work. If I had thought of it I should have given you another one as a door prize. Next Time! Most of the cars I’ve had recently have tinted rear windows so window decals don’t work too well.
You all, and Jeff and Lynn, and others I’m forgetting did a fine job arranging this event. Barb and I had a really good time this weekend.
Thanks for the time and effort you all invested to make this event a success.

Best regards,
George Davis
p.s. Peg: The failure to complete the “Nova Novel” in a timely fashion is my fault, but we have not abandoned the effort yet. I may have to insert a chapter and see if we can do another go-round. I’m not sure what we have is concludable (guess that is not a word that spell check recognizes, but I think it works for me) in a single chapter. Anyway, don’t write us off yet.

Dear Peg,

Just picked up your email, thanks for sending it to my work address (it’s the only way to get a response from me quickly)! Just wanted to add to Ed’s sentiments about the weekend, IT WAS FUN!
I could tell how much work you, Jeff, Lynn and Trisha put into the events, and it surly paid off. How cool to renew friendships and catch up with everyone.
I don’t feel like you and I had time to talk, maybe we could get together sometime when I come over to visit my step mother. Glad to hear that another get together is in the planning stages for 5 years down the road, let me know if I can help.

Megarie Sickel
Thanks again!

I met a group of people this weekend that I have known for over 40 years. I know them well for we have shared remembrances of a unique high school experience, of taking the less certain path, of successes and failures, of good and bad teachers, of limitless possibilities, of lost friends and heroes, of the uncertainties of youth and the times.

Yet, each time we gather, it is a new group I meet for they have been changed by their experiences, their lives. I am amazed all over again at their wit and wisdom, their accomplishments, the adversity they have overcome. The adventures and challenges they encounter come in many forms -- it is as much an adventure and challenge to build a new company or career as it is to deal with loss or to create a life that is meaningful and healthful despite what it may lack in monetary reward. Each time we meet, they share with me, for which I am grateful, and I learn from them and gain confidence so that I feel I can do anything.

I come away from this weekend having refreshed many sweet memories: Best friends, that final football season, skipping school, the long commute, pooling money to buy gas, THE BOAT RIDE (finally!), Carolyn teaching me to drive, Kate trying to teach me to sing harmony, fruit loops, double dating, the three witches:"double, double, toil and trouble", the 1964 World's Fair, "finding" lumber for the NOVA letters, yellow roses, Parliaments and chocolate, talking and dreaming about the future, madras (it's back!).... I could go on but will rather stop to say:

The weekend was a marvelous gift given by those who organized it and made it happen but also by those who attended and shared freely their memories, experiences and lives.
Thank you, all, for then and for now.

Kerry Martin Maxwell

Peggy - It was a terrific weekend I will long remember. The committee did an excellent job in the planning stages and made it so comfortable for each of us to rekindle memories of high school.

I really enjoyed the openness of the folks from our class. Helping with decorations was just good old fashioned fun.

Thanks for sharing so easily with us! I really enjoyed seeing you and lunch at Shula's. Thanks for the memories.

Sharon

I really want to thank all of you so very much for all the hard work. It came off wonderfully and, after all, what we really wanted was to see one another.

I guess when you think about it, the same people always take the same rolls. Nothing really changes all that much.

We had a great time, we have a great class, and it is significant that we all remember Nova for what it was and we are – “very special.”

I truly hope we can do a 45th and 50th. That is very doable in some way. I can’t say thank you enough and I truly wish all of you the very best in the future.

My God bless you all in the years to come.

Bill Napier

I just want to thank you all for getting in touch with me for this reunion, but the biggest thanks is to the work you poured out in making this a fantastic reunion and weekend.

Arlene & I had a really great time; it was good getting reconnected with old classmates I had lost touch with, we met some new friends, and enjoyed some (too much) really great home brewed beer!

The documents we were given at the dinner are priceless: the articles about Nova, the bios and the class roster with contact information. We even brought home a nice photo of the 2 of us! You thought of everything.

Thanks again, keep in touch and I'm looking forward to the next Nova reunion.

Kind regards,

Jim Corbitt

THE NOVA NOVEL

The collaberative FICTION writing project is nearing completion The authors include
Lynn Bixler
George Davis
Peggy Brozicevik
Sam Tischler
Barbara Klein
Tullio Proni
and Duane.

To recap, the project is a sequential effort with each author writing a 15 page ( or more) chapter ending it with a "cliff-hanger" which will then be mailed to the next writer.

To make it interesting, the writers have agreed to see if a (real) publisher would want to publish the final result. The goal was to have the finished manuscript/book available to unveil at the 40th NOVA reunion. Duane writes that the team may not make their deadline but we will hear about the project once it is completed. News will be posted on the website.

Portland Mini Reunion
February 2005
L-R Ken Bixler, Lynn Allieri Bixler, Kathy Bowman, Duane ( aka Skip) Bowman

Duane wrote, "Was that a mini-reunion? I thought we just went to a basketball game. And a good one! Lynn said it was her first B-ball game, but I think she meant Pro game. For her first game, she did pretty good. Even invented new B-ball terms. A shot she called a "hanger". That's when the guy dunks the ball and hangs from the rim after. We were sitting right under the hoop so we got to see a number of those and yelled "HANGER" for each. A real hoot! ... A see-saw game, final score Blazers 102, Hawks 101."
