Governor’s Message

What a wonderful Convention! Our 85th Quota International Convention held in San Jose, California last month brought together almost 400 Quotarians from ten countries to renew old friendships, make new ones, and discuss Quota's future. It was an exhilarating time. There was so much packed into those four days - fun social activities where we all were able to relax and connect with one another, thoughtful discussion groups in which we could share ideas with Quotarians from around the world, and general meeting sessions dealing with the business of Quota. We laughed a lot, we cried some, and we all came away invigorated, with great pride in being Quotarians, and ready for an exciting year.

I was very proud to be there as a representative from our District, and to see once again how great this District is. There are six Districts in our South Area and District 27 had the highest percentage of attendance at Convention of any of these six Districts. We came the farthest with the most people, and I so enjoyed being there with all of you.

Of the forty-three Districts in Quota, there were ten with net gains in membership, and District 27 was recognized as one of them. Another reason to be very proud.

During Saturday's business session, Lt. Governor Cindy Hurd and Michelle Browett, both from Quota International of Coral Springs/Parkland, gave an outstanding presentation on Junior Quota Clubs. They did an excellent job, and I know that after their presentation many Quotarians will go back to their clubs with the idea of forming Junior Clubs. Great job, Ladies!

Dolores Taylor of Quota International Fort Lauderdale was recognized from the podium by Toddy Silkman for her efforts in facilitating the partnership with Siemens Hearing Instruments and Quota International to provide hearing aids to children from disadvantaged circumstances.

Lunch Saturday brought together the Go-Getters, a new group of Quotarians dedicated to growing Quota with new clubs and branches. It was exciting to see so many from District 27 in attendance, sharing their ideas and plans for the growth of our District.

Sunday's General Session was mainly devoted to discussion of and voting on proposed Bylaw amendments. As you can imagine, the proposal to increase International dues was the main topic, and there was much thought-provoking dialogue from Quotarians who spoke from the floor, as well as from our Quota leaders. It was gratifying to see that, although some may have had differing opinions, everyone was and is dedicated to the continuance of Quota. No one could imagine life without Quota, and to that end the Bylaw amendment to increase International dues to $75.00 passed. This increase will become effective for 2009 dues.

Sunday evening was District Party Night, and 25 Quotarians and guests from District 27 had a wonderful dinner and evening of fellowship at Bella Mia Restaurant. We were joined by three Quotarians from Georgia who added more fun to our group. I think our laughter could be heard throughout the restaurant!

On Monday evening I had the honor of walking into Installation Banquet and being introduced as Governor of District 27. It was made all the more special for me by having Cindy walk beside me and be introduced as Lt. Governor.

And the evening just kept getting better. Our own Laura Lahman took the stage to be introduced as our new South Area Director. Our Past South Area Director Gwenn Jackson was installed as International Treasurer. And another Past South Area Director, and great friend of District 27, Rosemary Hannie, was elected during this Convention as our 2009/2010 International President.

Our 2007/2008 International President Daryl presided over this Convention with her usual humor and sincerity, and reminded us all to continue to "Create a Chorus of Caring".

Incoming President Toddy, who we had the pleasure of meeting at our District Conference this year, will lead us in 2008/2009 with her energy and enthusiasm, and urges us all to "Give the Gift of Quota".
