Semi Finals - Philadelphia Reveloution 6 vs Rebels 3

The Rebels took home third place in the ECHO Nationals that brought 11 teams into South Florida from around the country.

We started very strong with a 8-0 win over the Longview Hotwheels (Texas). The kids showed some great team work working the give-n-go to perfection. The next game brought the Hyper Heat (Orlando) and another 8-0 win. Another great team effort with good passing to open players for easy shots against a very good goalie. Of course what would a tournament be without playing the Magic? This was the only team in the tournament we had faced previously this year. We came away with a 6-1 victory. Entering the next game to determine the seeding for the playoffs, we had given up only 1 goal in 3 games (thanks to our solid defense and outstanding goalie play), while scoring 24 goals. A win against the Mission Cooler Selects (Georgia) team would earn us a first place seed and a bye into the championship game. The Mission team came out on fire to take a quick lead. The game was tied in the third period 2-2, when the Mission team took the lead with around 5 minutes to go. After a timeout, our kids were determined to even the score. The Rebels pressed the play in the Mission end of the rink scoring a goal to even the score 3-3. We had 2 scoring chances in the final minute that just missed. The tie earned us a second seed pitting us against the Philadelphia Revolution in the playoffs. The Philly team came out and shocked us with 3 quick goals. They added 2 more goals before we started to play better team hockey. We got our 1st goal in the 3 period, trailing 5-1 with the momentum beginning to switch in our favor, we had two great scoring opportunities where we missed open nets with the goalie out of position. The Revolution scored their 6th goal on a fantastic indivdual effort between two defensemen to put the game out of reach. However, our kids more determined then ever, controlled the play for the remainder of the game scoring 2 more goals; losing 6-3. The Philly team went on to defeat the Jr. Wizards in the finals 4-2.

Although our goal was to win this tournament, our kids have a lot to be proud of. The events following the Philladelphia game showed the support for one another as teammates and friends. I am very proud of the way each player handled themself in light of the remarks and poor sportsmanship exhibited by the other team. In the end on Saturday, it was Philadelphia's day to win.

The Rebels will work harder to prepare for TORHS!

Triple Crown Qualifier (12 & under): 5th Place (tied) (1 wins 2 losses 0 ties )
June 6-8, 2003
GAME RESULTS
Nailers 9 vs Rebels 2
Jackals 8 vs Rebels 1
Rebels 4 vs SuperSkate Selects 3
(did not make playoffs due to point differential)

not included in stats!

To challenge and prepare our kids for the competition that lies ahead with TORHS and NARCH, we played in the 12 & under division. Thinking we were entered in the silver division, we faced two strong gold division teams to start of the torunament. The first game brought the Nailers. We held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. The game quickly changed momentum when the Nailers scored on two power plays taking a 3-2 lead and never looked back.

Next came the Jackals, again we played tough for the first period trailing 2-1 at the end of the period. The Jackals produced 3 short handed goals in the second period to break the will of these young players.

The early game on Sunday matched us against the SuperSkate Select team. We trailed 1-0 before getting on track scoring 3 unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. These kids played their hearts out recording a 4-3 victory, our first win in a 12 & under division. We had to wait to see whether or not we would make the playoffs. Although we had the same record as two other teams, we did not make the playoffs due to the point differential. All in all, this tournament was a good learning process for our kids. Both teams we lost to on Saturday went on to meet each other in the gold finals, with the Jackals defeating the Nailers.

Mr. Jones again was stellar in the net, with the strong support of the Department of Defense: Colin, Garry, Josh and James. The Front Line: Greg, Danny, Scott and Mike had their scoring opportunities in the early games and came on strong in the finale to notch a victory in the 12 & under division.

Great Job Rebels! You met the challenge set forth!

AAU Disney Nationals - Orlando: 3rd Place (wins 5 losses 1 ties 0)
May 22-26, 2003
GAME RESULTS
Rebels 8 vs Slapshot Ice Storm 1
Rebels 3 vs Gulf Coast 2
Rebels 6 vs Magic's Hockey 2
Playoffs - Rebels 9 vs Thunderblades 3
Semi Finals - Jr. Wizards 7 vs Rebels 4
Bronze Medal Game - Rebels 5 vs Pro Joy Predators 2

Entering this tournament the Rebels had won three titles in a row, looking for their fourth at the AAU Disney Nationals. The field of competition hosted 16 teams from around the country.

The Rebels opened up the tournament with a strong showing beating a team from Alpharetta, Georgia on their way to an undefeated campaign in the round robin play, seeding #1 in their bracket. The first playoff game saw a rematch of an earlier contest (NARCH - March) with the Thunderblades. In the previous meeting, the Thunderblades won 6-4. This time around the Rebels, a much improved team, came to play and easily won the rematch 9-3 setting up a semi final game with the Wizards. The Rebels held a 3-2 lead with a little more than 7 minutes left in the game when the Wizards turned the momentum scoring 4 quick goals to take a 6-3 lead. The Rebels responded by adding another goal with a couple of minutes remaining. Within the final two minutes, the Rebels had a couple of good scoring opportunities but solid goalie play from the Wizards stopped the Rebels. The Wizards added another goal with just seconds left to win 7-4. The Pro Joy Predators were next in the Bronze medal game. The Predators took a quick 1-0 lead. The Rebels responded puting the game out of reach in the second period winning 5-2 earning the Bronze medal finishing the tournament with 5 wins and 1 loss.

This tournament was again dictated by the Department of Defense! Garry, Colin, Josh, James and Brad allowed 14 shots per game. Garry's performance was recognized with the tournament's most valuable defenseman award. Josh, James and Colin played extremely well keeping the opposing team away from scoring opportunities. Brad was solid making some remarkable saves. One being a stick save on a rebound that was PHENOMENAL! The forwards did their jobs, by averaging nearly 6 goals per game. Greg led the Rebels in scoring, Mike and Greg led the team in total points, Mike led the team in assists with Scott and Danny adding 17 points amongst them to round off the Front Line attack.

What a weekend! CONGRATULATIONS REBELS!
