Commodore's Message

This May 26 2012, Memorial day regatta was held at Wickham Park.
Eighteen skippers were signed up to sail 3 classes of boats: Soling,
US1M, and US12. Steve Rutz opened the regatta with a moving
article found in the newspaper about how grateful we are for all the
sacrifices our service men and woman have given us here at home.
We then had the pledge of allegiance to our flag. Weather was clear
and warm. The wind was light and unpredictable. Adam Rottmann
was R.D. for the Solings for their first 2 heats. All classes sailed 6
heats. Ruth Comstock kept the score for each class. Brian Fletcher
was R.D. for the U.S. 1 meter class and the U.S.12 class. Each class
sailed 4 heats by noon time. Lunch was already set up by Angela
Phillips. Angela passed out the sandwiches to everyone along with
red white and blue cup cakes. Space Coast Model Sailing Club paid
for the lunch and drinks. After lunch we had drawings for all the
donations Rich Phillips received from venders. Gifts ranged from boat
parts to gift certificates. There were enough for all members of our
club attending the Regatta. The remaining two heats for each class
were sailed after lunch. Sailing in this regatta was a pleasure. We
had no serious fouls or mishaps. The sailing was challenging due
to the close competition and the light changeable winds. Don Bryant,
our web master, was first in the Soling fleet. It was no surprise that
Dennis Dwyer took first in the U.S. 1 meter fleet. Bob Comstock took
first in the U.S. 12 fleet. These winners each took home the perpetual
Memorial day trophies. Their names are being engraved on the plaques
at this writing. We members and the club will thank these venders
for making this event not only a pleasure but a rewarding event.
Pictures taken at the event and final scores are included below.

Sincerely Commodore Steve Spatenga
