His Legacy Continues

January 2012

Dear Business Owner,

You are invited to participate with your support in our Youth Service Project.

The 50th Annual - Ed Wells, Jr. / Kiwanis Invitational Track & Field Meet

occurring on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 from 3PM til 11PM at Clearwater High School.

For 44 years, Ed Wells, Jr. was Meet Director and spearheaded the fundraising of hundreds of thousands of dollars to resurface the Clearwater High School track in fact, 4 times! In 2005, the entire track was rebuilt to world class and Olympic standards valued at $250,000. His vision and personal commitment to accomplish this for our community was remarkable. Kiwanis is honored to continue Eds legacy - hosting Floridas best high school invitational track meet. Jim Ewbank is Meet Director. Jim currently serves on our club's Board of Directors and is a Past President.

34 boys and girls track teams from Pinellas county high schools will participate. Over 400 medals will be awarded to the top eight places for each event. Trophies will be presented for 1st and 2nd place for both boys and girls teams along with MVP awards for the top scoring boy and girl athletes. The students truly appreciate competing in our meet.

Kiwanis is responsible for coordinating the meet activities for the school athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers including all expenses. Kiwanis is asking for your support as a Track Meet Program Advertiser or Event Sponsor. The Program is professionally printed and all attendees of the Track Meet will receive a copy.

Bio

Ed Wells Jr. led Clearwater High School's track and football teams to more than 100 victories.

  • Served as a Pinellas County middle school administrator
  • Ed Wells Jr., built champion track and football teams at Clearwater High School
  • A native of Kentucky, Mr. Wells moved to Clearwater in 1957 to start anew with his family. Here, he coached football and track teams at Clearwater High to more than 100 victories and refinished the school's track four times.
  • An education stalwart, he later served the Pinellas County school system as an assistant principal at Kennedy and Fitzgerald middle schools.
  • Mr. Wells cared deeply about the people around him, said his son, Ed Wells III. That was reflected in actions like buying a load of turkeys, bringing them to what was Young's Pit Bar-B-Q every Thanksgiving to be cooked, and hand-delivering them to the homes of workers in Clearwater High's cafeteria - so they would not have to prepare food again on their day off. He would do the same thing with hams on Christmas, Ed Wells III said.
  • "He'd do anything for you if you asked him - or if you didn't ask him," said Deloris Wells, his wife of 50 years. "And he loved to watch sports. I'd dare you to name a sport that he hasn't watched."
  • Mr. Wells was an old-school coach known for his tough but fair approach and his signature exclamation - "You darn devil!" - said Jim Seever, one of his former football players.
  • "He was an institution in Clearwater," said Seever, 56, a 1968 Clearwater High graduate. "If you lived in Clearwater in the '60s, you knew who he was."
  • In addition to coaching football and track, Mr. Wells officiated countless athletic events in Florida, including the Sunshine State Games, Florida State University Relays, University of Florida Relays and five state finals in high school basketball.
  • Starting in 1992, the prefix "Ed Wells Jr." was added to the annual Kiwanis Invitational Track & Field Meet at Clearwater High.
  • Mr. Wells' love for sports started early. He was on his high school's baseball, basketball, football and track teams. While in college at Morehead State University in Kentucky, he was a track star and a football player. He was a member of the first Morehead State track team to win at the Ohio Valley Conference, in both 1955 and 1956. The university inducted Mr. Wells into its Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2005.
  • With his wife, Mr. Wells officiated the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic trials as well as the 2000 Olympic and ParaOlympic Games. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wells are master level officials in track and field and have officiated meets all over the country.
  • Fairness was always important to Mr. Wells, Ed Wells III said. His father was always proud that the first high school at which he coached in Carlise, Ky., was also the first school in the state to desegregate.

Athletic Hall of Fame - 2005 - Moorehead State University

    • Ed Wells Jr. was captain of the 1955 MSU track and field team that won the OVC Championship. He was a top sprinter who competed in the 100-yard dash, 200-yard dash, 220-yard low hurdles and in relays. At MSU, he also lettered four years in football. After leaving the campus, he became a national track and field official and has been named to the Track Hall of Fame in Florida.
  • Passed away on Oct. 15, 2006
