![]() Find the latest news on the Tallahassee Autism Support Coalition here on our blog: http://tallahasseeautismsupportcoalition.blogspot.com/ Who We Are: T* A* S* C* - the Tallahassee Autism Support Coalition seeks to provide education, advocacy, and support groups for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), their families, friends and other supporters. T* A* S* C*'s membership includes “aspies” – adults with Asperger’s Syndrome and other ASDs, their family members, friends, and professionals who work with them. T* A* S* C* also help members to access other services. T* A* S* C* started as the ‘Autism-Asperger’ Social Support Group in February 2004. This evolved and split into two other efforts, mentioned below. More than three years later, the organization sponsors the peer-organized Tallahassee Asperger Support Group and an informal, participant-driven social activities program, including both a weekly social get-together and a monthly participant-driven social activity, different every time ... T* A* S* C* seeks funding and other support to continue and expand efforts in four areas: Support, Information & Referral Services, Outreach, and Advocacy & Public Awareness. What We Do -Together: Support T* A* S* C* would like to improve and expand its support program, now represented solely by the Tallahassee Autism Support Group. There has been interest in a similar group for the parents of higher-functioning adults with ASDs. In addition, many in the greater Big Bend region, including southeast Georgia, have expressed an interest in participating in the current support group, but are unable to do so. In addition, we need resources to help start groups to serve these individuals. In addition, the informal social program needs greater resources to both allow more individuals to participate, as well allow for a greater range of activities. These programs draw on the expertise of professionals and the needs and interests of individuals with ASDs, their friends and family members. Outreach Outreach efforts have included a newsletter, past volunteer recruitment efforts, flyers, and word-of-mouth. >T* A* S* C* seeks to provide information and support on issues related to higher-functioning adults with ASDs. Advocacy T* A* S* C*seeks to identify local spokespersons, resources, and strategies to reduce ignorance and stigma related to ASDs and increase awareness of our concerns. Public Awareness The mission of T* A* S* C* is to promote support, reduce ignorance and stigma, and increase venues for the care and treatment for aspies and their families requires a strong advocacy effort. Equally required, is awareness of the many issues that touch the lives of those that T* A* S* C* seeks to serve. We have long wanted to work more and better with government agencies, elected and appointed officials, and other organizations on a regular basis to assure that laws and regulations do no harm and indeed work to improve lives. Thus, T* A* S* C* is fortunate to be an affiliate of the ARC of Florida, through which it hopes to develop a self-advocacy program and work together in other endeavors, collaborating to achieve a support system for all.

Self-Advocacy T* A* S* C* is pleased to announce that the self-advocacy training program initiated by the series held during January 2008 will continue online for the benefit of those subscribed to our message board. |
Community Support Related to the self-advocacy opportunities is T* A* S* C*'s status as an ARC of Florida affiliate. Sadly, our relationship with the FSU CARD has ended due to disagreements as to its nature.

Other News In January, a new support group was started in Panama City to make T* A* S* C* accessible to the Bay County, Florida area! We hope to also begin work towards expanding our support program through new groups in outlying areas of the Big Bend region of Florida, as well as Southeast Georgia. These would not only be for higher-functioning adults with autism spectrum disorders, but also for their friends and family members. More to come!
