National Women's History Month
National Women's History Month

"Women - Inspiring Hope and Possibilities"

March 2004

In 1980, the National Women’s History Project (NWHP) was founded in Santa Rosa, California, as a nonprofit corporation. The goal was to provide a national clearinghouse for general information about women’s history and for specific information about National Women’s History Week celebrations. With the support and curriculum materials generated by the National Women’s History Project, many state departments of education promoted programs for National Women’s History Week as a means toward achieving a more balanced curriculum.

In 1987, at the request of women’s organizations, museums, libraries, youth leaders, and educators throughout the country, the National Women’s History

Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the national celebrations to the entire month of March. A National Women’s History Month Resolution

was quickly approved with strong bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. Since 1992, a Presidential Proclamation has carried the directive for what is now a major national and international celebration.

NATIONAL ENGINEERS' WEEK BANQUET A SUCCESS!
NATIONAL ENGINEERS' WEEK BANQUET, FLORIDA WEST COAST; FRIDAY, FEB 27:

On Friday, February 27th, several engineering societies from around the Tampa Bay Area joined together to celebrate National Engineers Week 2004. The banquet was held at the Radisson Hotel in St. Petersburg and was represented by the:

·         American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) – Tampa Bay Chapter

·         American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) – Florida West Coast Branch

·         Florida Engineering Society (FES) – Pinellas Chapter

·         Florida Engineering Society (FES) – Tampa Chapter

On the same Friday, USF kicked off its annual Engineering Expo. USF Engineering Expo provides the College of Engineering with an opportunity to strengthen its relationship with the rest of the community, local industries, and local K-12 students who get a first hand introduction to various areas of engineering career tracks. EXPO provides high and middle school students the rare opportunity of interacting with the leading technical and engineering firms as well as university engineering students and faculty.

A big thanks to Anjana Swann, SWE-TBA secretary, who sought out and secured Dr. Robin Murphy as the Keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Robin Murphy received a BME in mechanical engineering, a MS and PhD in computer science, all from Georgia Tech, where she was a Rockwell International Doctoral Fellow. Since 1998, she has been an associate professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of South Florida with a joint appointment in Cognitive and Neural Sciences in the Department of Psychology. She is Director of the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue at USF and recipient of an NIUSR Eagle Award for her participation at the World Trade Center. Dr. Murphy's textbook, Introduction to AI Robotics, is the number one selling mobile robotics textbook.

Our Section Rep / Newsletter Editor, Sandy Pettit, was nominated by the SWE-TBA section for Engineer of the Year. Sandy is Project Manager / Professional Engineer for Hillsborough county Public Works Department / Engineering Division. She supervises a team of 7 engineers and inspectors. She holds a BSChE degree from the University of South Florida and a PE license in Florida.

SWE-TBA also honored Arenee Fanchon Teena Smith with the engineering student award. Arenee is the mother of two, a twelve-year-old son Evan, and a four-year-old daughter Lauryn. She volunteers in activities focused on young adults and children at her church. She designed and maintains her church’s website. An avid music lover, Arenee sings and plays the piano. Upon graduation, Arenee plans to focus on a career in the environmental area of civil engineering. Congratulations!
