The Team Blog: Top Shelf Snapshots
The best way to record the adventures of a travel hockey team is through a blog, which we will do here. Tidbits, trivia and interesting stuff will come with the team's travels, and the best of it will settle here in this space.
The FIRST BLOG, on Friday the 13th of Jan.:One of the best things about the 12 under 2006 PAL Thunderblades is that most of them have been playing together for four years now, and some even longer than that (Cody and Mark, for example). The best thing about it is, they are good friends AND teammates. We expect this closeness will benefit the team and its play as the PAL Thunderblades head into a competitive 2006 season. Battle-hardened teams with chemistry and experience always have the most fun! Tuesday, Jan. 31: What can you say about a team that skates out on the rink in its first tournament and wins 4 straight games by a combined score of 23-4, then wins an Overtime Semifinal game against the home team Scorpions with a laser slapshot! Even though we lost a heartbreaker in the Finals 3-1 to Skater's Choice Red, a lot of which was due to the many penalties we received, Coach Joe was very positive as the team waited to be presented their medals at the end of the game. "You should be proud of what you accomplished," he said. Skater's Choice outskated the Thunderblades, and that was the edge, he said. "This should make you want to go back and get faster so next time we play them, we beat them." Everyone who watched the game knows he's right, because the Thunderblades matched up evenly with Skater's Choice in virtually every other respect. Another sign of a good season was that so many different Thunderblades players scored and had assists. That's always solid evidence of a well-rounded team. And the defense was as solid as a rock, which was fun to watch.Feb. 11, 2006: We were in the finals again at ECHO Regional Qualifier at SkateZone, after thrilling wins versus the Scorpion Outlaws in a 3-0 shutout for goalie Dominick, and a 5-3 squeaker versus the Gulf Coast Storm. Congratulations to Drew, who won another top gun award for his skilled sharpshooting. Our preliminary round record is now 5-1-0, and our playoff record 1-2.The PAL Thunderblades are now qualified to play in ECHO Nationals in June in Atlanta.Port St. Lucie PAL leader Tim Reilly surprised the team with PAL t-shirts, mouthguards and free food certificates at the tournament. Thanks, Tim! You are always there for our team, and we appreciate it.Morning-after thoughts on Feb. 27, after winning the Daytona Beach Spring Breakaway VII 12s Championship on Feb. 26: When is a winning streak a hot streak? When you go through preliminaries with a 3-0-0 record and then dominate in the Finals after coming back from a 2-goal deficit! The PAL Thunderblades are super-hot, and getting hotter! The turning point was in the second game versus the Scorpion Outlaws, when Coach Joe challenged the team to show what they were made of, resulting in a key win and eventually, the tournament championship. And once again, we dominated the individual awards categories, with Drew winning top scorer, Dominick winning Most Valuable Goalie, and Cody winning Championship MVP. March 13, two days after the Thunderblades go undefeated (3-0) and were unscored on (24-0) at the inaugural Treasure Coast Invitational. Besides the excellent play by the entire team, there was something you did NOT see that was very impressive--the Thunderblades never celebrated any goal excessively, and never made fun of their outmanned opponents. Knowing how to play and how to act are sure signs that our PAL Thunderblades are ready for greater things to come!
April 10, 2006, two days after the ECHO Regional Qualifier in West Palm and Deerfield Beach: No doubt about it, losing hurts. The TBlades played hard, but some powerful teams were laying in wait at ECHO...the second season of ice teams turned inline and players jumping on teams has begun. No need to be down about losing the games. Instead, we need to remember what the wise old hockey coach said, "You learn much more from losing than winning." To take on tough teams, the TBlades just need to skate faster and pass harder and focus on sharpening other basic skills they already have, and the fun and winning will be back as a result.

Monday, April 24, two days after the 2Hot4Ice Regionals at SkateZone. There's no doubt, we played stronger and had leads--for the first two periods. Third period was a challenge--a main mission in practice and play will be to get our team strength up to winning speed. We have the talent; we just need to keep sharpening the tools. One thing is for sure; the Thunderblades never ever gave up in any game. That's a rock to build wins on.
Monday, May 1, 2006, two days after the heartbreaking semifinal 4-3 loss to the Plantation Vipers at USA Hockey Inline Regionals. Anyone who wants proof of how hard the Thunderblades were playing need only talk to Michael, who broke his arm in two places giving it all to make a play. Here's to that arm healing up fast! The Thunderblades deserve major praise for giving everything they had to do well as a team, as they always do.

Thursday, May 18, looking back at the AAU Regionals. The Thunderblades continue to show great skill and promise in games like the first one versus the Cooper City Blaze, a 6-0 shutout that featured strong passes and beautiful plays, assists and goals. But once again, the playoffs proved to be elusive for our team after a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to the South Florida Rink Rats. Some of the great things the team showed at AAU included the same never-give-up attitude the team has carried proudly all year, along with a real show of caring toward teammates, and great spirit throughout.
June 20, 3 days after Saturday's thrilling 2006 2Hot4Ice 12 and under Final featuring the PAL Thunderblades versus the Atlanta Barracudas. Although we came in on the down side of the 3-2 score, we played with class and were shooting gallantly for overtime to the last second. The team's 3-2-1 overall record and the fact that they are one of only 2 teams out of the 10 in the division from 7 states to walk away with medals make this tournament particularly sweet. With winning attitudes toward each other, the team set about its business of having fun and making this statement as an experienced travel team: We want to be in the Final Game. And it happened. Everyone on the team played as well as they ever have, both individually and as a unit. Going up to South Carolina and beating teams from 3 states and making the Championship Game shows that Florida is a great place for inline hockey because it's so tough to compete against all the great teams here. That challenge has made the PAL Thunderblades work harder and harder to compete. The payoff came in Columbia, SC, at 2Hot4Ice.
Oct. 10, 2006, after the incredible Disney Ultimate Inline Hockey Experience Silver Championship, with a 5-2-0 record, and Mark winning MVP and Dominick winning MVG: This was one of the biggest payoffs of the year for all the hard work the team has put in, at practice and at tournaments. If you play in big games at big tournaments, you start winning those big games. The PAL Thunderblades showed once again what true team sportsmanship is about with this latest championship.
We are a PAL Team and Proud of It
The Police Athletic League is much more than a supporter of youth athletics such as roller hockey. It is truly an organization that reaches out to the kids in the community, giving them opportunities to grow and excel in their favorite sports. Thank you, Port St. Lucie PAL, for your wonderful support of the 12 and under PAL Thunderblades. When the Thunderblades play, they are playing for themselves as individuals, for the team as the strongest unit, and for PAL as the greatest sponsor.
