During the third weekend of September, the team participated in an Iron Man tournament at SkateZone. For those not familiar with the format, an Iron man tournament is played with 4 players and a goalie. The game is played for 15 minutes and the only face off is at the beginning of the game, unless OT is necessary. All penalties are penalty shots and the clock only stops if a penalty is called. It's a test of endurance and great for conditioning.
The U-14 PAL Thunderblades attended with one new player and a replacement goalie. The team went 1-2-0 with a close OT loss in their final game. Ironically, the team scored as many goals as they had scored against them. The next Iron Man tournament will be hosted by PAL at the YMCA SportsWorld rink on December 10th. ...............................................................................................................................................................................................The U-14 PAL Thunderblades won the Rec-Select tournament in August, going 3-0-1, outscoring their opponents 20-7. Kevin Reilly, in only his second start was named Most Valuable Goalie, allowing fewer than two goals per game. Josh Baldwin and Brandon McNeal were named co-MVP's. Baldwin dominated play from his defensive position, scoring and setting up McNeal and his teammates for several goals.
Coach Rose was proud of the team with goals equally distributed amongst the team. Even the Under 12 players that stepped up contributed in the scoring. The team faced the Martin County Cobra's making for a sweet all area Championship game. ........................................................................................................................................................... The team won the Rec-Select tournament held in June going 3-0-1, outscoring their opponents 18-6. Cori Dellapietra was named MVG and Bardy Vail was co-MVP.
In the first game against Pines Thunder, Brandon McNeal and Kevin Reilly scored to secure the tie. In the second game, the Thunderblades defeated the Martin County Cobra's off a hat trick by Drew Planchon (or is he Brando-inside joke).
The next game against the Miami Bulldogs was a close one with the PAL squad winning 3-2. The most exciting game because of a Thunderblade penalty late in the game, had the Bulldogs pull their goalie for a 5 on 3 man advantage. DellaPietra made a diving save with under a minute to go and on the ensuing face-off, Mike Wiltrack was able to clear the puck after a brief scramble in the Thunderblades zone.
In the final game, against a talented Bulldogs squad, the PAL Thunderblades rallied from a 1 goal deficit to win 6-2. Brady Vail sparked the team with a short handed goal late in the first period and the team earned the Championship trophies. |
