It began with an elementary school writing assignment. A young man writing that, instead of toys, he would do without everything if only he could have a clean and safe bathroom for Christmas. A bathroom that wouldn't bring harm to his family. Riddled with mold and damage, the bathroom was negatively affecting the health of his family. His mother read his essay, through tears, and was frustrated at her inability to help her family. Struggling through nursing school, this single mom of three was having a hard time staying ahead of the regular demands of everyday life, let alone the restoration of a bathroom. So, she did what she could . . . she asked for help and for prayers. A community began praying for her. God began throwing open -- wide open -- door after door after door. A General Contractor named Matt Morgan decided that he would help this family. He had materials, tools, skills and leadership experience - he could help make this Christmas Wish come true. And it began to fall into place . . . Christine called Brian, an experienced handyman, and he offered to help. Angela spoke with Chris who contacted friends at Micah Pest Control. Micah offered to treat the home for pests. Sandi spoke to Terry, an experienced handyman, about how they could help. Terry spoke with his employer, M & M Tile, who offered him the supplies he would need; grout, thin-set, two bath towel bars, a toilet paper roll holder and gorgeous tile for the shower walls. Terry would handle the tile work. Jimmy, the assistant manager at Home Depot, offered a brand new toilet and a brand new bathtub. Matt spoke to Ken, who offered a beautiful brand new vanity, new sink, new oval mirror, and light fixture. He had an "extra set" in storage he was able to share . . . Kristen donated a brand new shower curtain, bath sheets, a waste basket, a toothbrush holder, a soap dispenser, a shower curtain rod, shower curtain rings, washcloths and hand towels. Another mom donated a heavy duty shower liner and fluffy bath mat. Chris at a local law firm prepared a Waiver of Liability for the "just in case" moment that didn't come. The generosity of Susan, Mike and Security Financial Advisers allowed us to bless this project in a very special way. Matt worked until 1:30 in the morning the night before to finish another job to clear his schedule for MOPS' bathroom project. Matt and Brian began demolishing the old bathroom at 8:00 on Friday morning. Piece after piece of something painful and upsetting made its way to a giant pile next to the house! A second Kristen came bearing donuts. Snacks were donated to the church workroom. Beckie came by with her pick-up truck and, joining forces with Melanie and her sweet family, made trips to the dump to rid this family's lives of what once was. Heather was consulted for decorating expertise and, through a stomach virus, graciously offered excellent insight. Liz treated our workers to a fully-loaded sub for lunch from Publix. Micah came and treated the house for pests. A fresh start . . . Matt installed the toilet and tub, the sink, after re-building a floor that unexpectedly crumpled away. He put up drywall and textured walls, with the enthusiastic and endearing support of our beautiful Michelle, her sleeves rolled up, work boots on, ready to work. Matt brought fixtures, and tubes, and pieces and parts, and brought this vision to life. Terry came, tile and supplies in hand, and began the time-consuming task of laying tile on the wall and the floor, as well as installing the towel bars and toilet paper roll holder. It was with great pleasure that he and Matt, when comparing the wall tile brought by Terry from M & M and the floor tile provided by Matt, discovered they had perfectly-matching tile from the same company. A perfect compliment. Terry left, after already putting in a full day at his regular job, at 11:30 Friday night. Saturday began early. Scott arrived at 8:00, beautifully-mixed custom paint in hand, a rich "light biscuit" color for those curious, and was greeted by two cheerful assistants, Melanie and Tracy. They tackled the small room, efficiently and with great enthusiasm, transforming the bathroom through delicate color. Karma and her family came to make that final trip to the dump and to offer their support to the project. Terry returned after his son's football game to grout and finish the tile work. The marble window sill and restructured trim gleamed. Matt began the time-intensive task of connecting piece after piece of the plumbing work. He installed the sink and lovely, tasteful arched faucets on the beautiful vanity and tub. He installed the "perfect to scale" large oval mirror and began finishing off every detail. He cheerfully returned on Sunday to tackle the final elements. Our MOPS' mom was a gracious and cheerful hostess who couldn't have been more appreciative. Her heart, worn on her sleeve for all to see, was filled with happiness at the generosity of people who were once strangers. Her 21-month-old daughter toddled happily through the construction process. And, our young man who wanted a safe bathroom for Christmas? A polite, well-mannered, handsome and friendly 11-year-old, he couldn't wipe the smile off of his face. The bathroom is now complete. It is an absolutely beautiful part of their small home. The love and generosity behind each element adds an unmatchable warmth and beauty. It took a community to bring this gift together. It took a leader named Matt Morgan to guide us in the direction we needed to go. It took his "Second in Commands", professional handymen Brian, Terry and Scott, to lend their skills to support this project. It took wonderful moms with tender hearts to borrow pickups, find childcare, put on faded work-clothes and to offer that love and support that all of us need. Every mom. No matter what the circumstance. If you ever need any kind of contracting assistance, Matt Morgan should be front and center on that list. Experienced, highly-skilled, exacting in standard, he is a generous, funny, talented and friendly man. His beautiful wife, Allie, a MOP herself, is a treasured and amazing part of our community. Thank you, Allie, for the phone calls, coordinating, transport and support! Hats off to you, Matt! Hats off to you all!
