Fountain City Performance Learning Center (FCPLC) FCPLC is a unique, nontraditional learning environment for high school students who are not succeeding in traditional schools for various reasons other than ability. A business-like learning environment is created where students work at their own pace and are challenged and supported to meet their academic goals. The strategy of FCPLC is built on “the 4 Rs”: • Relationships with students • Relevant instruction • Rigorous academics • Results SELECTION CRITERIA Students and their parents may request an assignment to ASC through their home school graduation coach. Applications must be complete and include all requested support documentation to insure that the selection process is fair and concluded expeditiously. Incomplete applications will be returned to the home school. To the degree possible, an equal number of students will be selected from each school. Characteristics for eligible students include, but are not limited to: Not eligible for Special Education Services Behind one to two years (or more) academically No glaring or extreme history of disruptive behavior No history of extreme truancy Interested in getting back on track academically Interested in following a curriculum with a career technology emphasis Desire to work in a limited environment through a narrowly focused and structured curriculum and a flexible instructional delivery ATI student’s ideal age is to turn 16 years old by June 2009. Accelerated Transition Initiative ATI is designed to meet the needs of a population of high school age students who are currently enrolled in middle school. The ideal ATI students are turning 16 years old by June 2009 and are at risk of dropping out of school. These students are placed in the 8th grade and instruction targets preparation for entering high school. Students are enrolled in one high school vocational course per term with potential to earn four credits by the end of the year. Nontraditional High School Students enrolled in the Academic Success Center in grades 9-12 work to earn a Career/Technology Diploma. In addition to the core academic offerings, vocational opportunities are available in the areas of Business, Construction, Public Safety, Family Consumer Science, Entrepreneurship, and Workplace Readiness. Teachers address diverse learning styles by incorporating innovative strategies into lessons. When students enroll, they must commit to completing the year at ASC. Following that year, they may return to their base school or remain at ASC. Typically sixty percent of the students return the following year. Place of Discovery (POD) The POD program targets high school age eighth graders and allows them to comfortably transition into a high school environment. Using the ninth grade academy concept and a team of three teachers, instruction targets basic performance standards through incremental lessons designed to provide a strong academic base for future success. These students can earn four credits per term. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
