Alpha Kappa Delta strives to promote the study of social issues and serve humankind, while at the same time providing an extracurricular outlet for students interested in the study of sociology.
There are over 440 chapters throughout the world, making AKD a truly international sociological honor society. The goal and purpose of AKD are reflected in its name, Alpha Kappa Delta, which was coined by founder Dr. Bogardus. The meaning of the acronym is:
A: Anthropon (Humankind)
K: Katamanthaneion (to investigate or research)
D: Diakonesein (for the purpose of service)

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be an officially declared sociology major or demonstrate a serious interest in sociology within an official program at Kennesaw State University.
- Must be at least a junior (third year) by the standards of Kennesaw State University.
- Must have accumulated the equivalent of an overall g.p.a. of 3.0 based on the four point scale, and rank in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship.
- Must have maintained the equivalent of a 3.0 g.p.a. in sociology courses taken at Kennesaw State University prior to initiation.
- Must have completed at least four regular courses in sociology prior to initiation.
- Must pay $50 membership fee.
Once membership is accepted, the following criteria will apply:
The status of Life Member is conferred upon those persons who have been approved for membership by Mu Chapter of this society and who have paid the initiation fee for membership.
The status of Voting member is conferred upon those Life Members who maintain a current subscription to Sociological Inquiry, official journal of the United Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta.
With your paid membership, you will receive a lifetime membership within AKD; a one year subscription to Sociological Inquiry, the official journal for the honor society; a certificate of membership; honor cord to wear at your graduation showing your membership to AKD; and the ability to participate in local, regional and national AKD activities.
Not only is AKD a great benefit your resume, but your membership will open doors for you in places that you may never have thought. As a member of AKD, you are eligible for a two-grade advancement for those applying for Federal Employment under "Superior Academic Achievement" preferences.
A cubicle is available for any AKD member to use. It is in the Student Organization office on the 3rd floor of the student center. Remember to sign in, so we get credit for using it.
*All expenses must be pre-approved by the Treasurer, President or Faculty Advisor in order to receive reimbursement.
