What's going on at Hannan!.   Dear Visitor, The educational process at Hannan Elementary Magnet Academy is a dynamic one. Distinction can best be achieved through a shared vision of academic excellence and goodness between school and community. Students need to be continually challenged and nurtured. Students of today are going to be expected to supersede expectations we have not even thought of yet. We will meet this challenge. Tangible, worthwhile goals are to be the framework for which excellence is measured. Flexibility, versatility and an abundance of energy are going to be required by everyone involved. Students, teachers, parents, administration and the community must work together to successfully prepare our children to be positive, productive global citizens. I invite you to visit Hannan Elementary Magnet Academy and see education at its best. Thank you for visiting our website.

How parents can help their child with homework!  from the National Parent Teacher Association 1. Send your children to school each day well rested, fed, and with a positive outlook. 2. Take an active interest in your children's schooling. 3. Try not to let your own negative experiences keep you from supporting and encouraging your children's learning. 4. If possible, set up a quiet, comfortable study area with good lighting and the school supplies that your children need. 5. Set a family quiet time during which you and your children can work together on homework, reading, letter writing, and playing games. 6. Allow your children to study in a way that helps each of them learn best. 7. Make homework a daily activity and help your children develop good homework habits.

School Council FAQ:

1. What is the School Council? As stated in the enabling legislation (The "A Plus Education Reform Act of 2000", aka HB1187): "The establishment of school councils is intended to help local boards of education develop and nurture participation, bring parents and the community together with teachers and school administrators to create a better understanding of and mutual respect for each other's concerns, and share ideas for school improvement. School councils shall be reflective of the school community.

(b) The management and control of public schools shall be the responsibility of local boards of education, and the school leader shall be the principal. School councils shall provide advice, recommendations, and assistance and represent the community of parents and businesses. Each member of the council, as a community representative, shall be accorded the respect and attention deserving of such election."

* Communicate with the school regularly. When you have a concern or question, write a note, email or phone the teacher. We need you on our team!

* Think ahead at the end of the school year, schedule a meeting to discuss with the teacher yor child's successes and challenges.

Helping Students to Get Organized

* Oraganization is important for everyone. Talk with your child about how you organize things and how he or she can become organized.

* Provide materials--such as an assignment log, notebooks, folders, a calander and other tools--that can get your child organized.

When your child is presented a large task, help them break it into small ones and establish a plan and deadline for each task.

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE
It's easy to feel like an awkward kind yourself while waiting for a parent-teacher conference to begin. (And those tiny chairs don't help!) Here's how to comfortably navigate-and make the most of -thomse important 15 minutes.

BE TIME-WISE Arrive a few minutes early. Turn off your cell phone. Jot down a short list of concerns and questions ahead of time and take it with you-it will help prevent those "Oh, I wish I'd asked that" monemtns after you leave.

REMEMBER YOU'RE ON THE SAME TEAM If a child suddenly starts having trouble in school, parents may become frustrated and even a little defensive toward the teacher, experts say. Try to avoid the blame game, and keep in mind that you both have your child's best intersts at heart.

TRUST THE TEACHER'S INSTINCTS Teacher see it all, and they know what's appropriate for their grade level when it comes to reading proficiency, math skills and classroom behavior. Take advantage of the insights the teacher can share about your child.

FIND OUT WHAT YOU CAN DO ON THE HOME FRONT Teachers apprecieate it (and kids benefit) when you ask, "What can I do to help my child do better in school?" Find out the ground rules for completing homework, turning in assignments and being prepared in class. If your child is struggling with a particular subject, ask for specifice suggestions on how you can help your child grasp the material.
