class.jpgWelcome to the BEST Classroom at Hannan!      Welcome to Mrs. Best's 2nd grade class. It is the third nine weeks and we are all very excited to be back from our winter holiday break. Here are some tid-bits to keep you up to date on what happening here at Hannan.
This nine weeks you should expect:
  1. ALL parents MUST have a conference with me before the end of the nine weeks. Otherwise your child will be penalized. Please see me to set a time and date that are best for you. If you set up an appointment, please keep the other parents in mind if you find you cannot attend. Please call at least 24 hours in advance to let me know. That way another parent can take your spot.
  2. Your child will be testing in STAR and MAP testing this nine weeks. These tests are very important and only happen a few times a year. Please work with them on refreshing old skills and conquering new skills.
  3. I will start sending home homework packets for children with low grades as extra credit. This is also for children who need to practice in the afternoons. Please work with your child on everything they do every day. It really does benefit them in the end.
  4. The holiday break in February and March has been changed due to make-ups for snow days. Children will now attend on February 17th, and March 14th. The calendar reflects differently so please be aware of the changes.
 
Reading Story this Week... This week the children are learning about plays. They have each been given either a part in the play or a job on the set design crew. On Friday the children will perform the play for their fellow classmates. They are also working with the Principal Pick book of the month. This is a non-fiction book about the life cycle of sea turtles. Ask them engaging how and why questions about their stories and see what they share about what we are learning. I think parents, you will be impressed!
 
Science
We are currently learning about the sun, moon and stars. This week we are working through the different phases of the Moon and how they effect the Earth.		 Social Studies
In social studies we are finishing our unit on Martin Luther King Jr. We will be starting at the end of the week a new unit on Jackie Robinson. This whole month is Black History Month, so please encourage your children to learn about multiple people who helped shape the way for equality and civil rights.
 
Homework
I have started sending home packets of homework for the children to do at home. If they complete it by the end of the week and turn it in they will recieve another, and the packets will count as extra credit to help some bring up their grades. If your child has low scores please help them complete and return their packets.

  • Monday: The children take their spelling words and transfer them to flash cards. They will also be taking home basic math skill cards for them to complete.
  • Tuesday: The students will be completing a phonics based break-block with their spelling words.They will also be taking home basic math skill cards for them to complete.
  • Wednesday: (word scramble) The students will be taking their spelling words and pulling hidden words from within them making new words.They will also be taking home basic math skill cards for them to complete.
  • Thursday: Study for your spelling test the next day. They will also be taking home basic math skill cards for them to complete.
  • Friday: NONE!!!!!

    Mathematics
    At this time we are going back to review and enhance past units. The children are particularly in need of help with time and money. Please work with your children to bring up their knowledge of these skills. Soon we will be moving into three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. This requires a lot of backwards and forwards thinking so please help them.
