![]() EXPLORE...THINK...READ... WONDER...CONSIDER... PONDER...CREATE... INVENT...EXPERIMENT... WRITE...IMAGINE... BELIEVE...& ACHIEVE! We certainly have been busy in the Tech Labs and in our classroom! Already, fourth graders have completed projects about the weather...some were PowerPoint presentations and one created an interactive game. Fourth graders are finished working on a report on a Native American tribe, written in Microsoft Word, a menu on Microsoft Publisher, and have built a variety of Native American shelters. The completed project with all three parts was due on October 15th; however,if students finished early, they made their presentations on or before October 10th, the last day of the nine weeks. We've also enjoyed learning about geography by using a wonderfully interactive software program called Geoskills in the Tech Lab. Students can get to the Geoskills program when they go to their SS textbook online. Mrs. Hustick taught our classes how to use the Excel program, and now they are preparing to work on Media Festival, which will be quite competitive this year. We teachers have had training to use our new Smartboards in the labs and more training with Mrs. Hustick in Nettrekker, which is already learning even more fun at Hannan. Thank you, Mrs. Hustick, for all you do! Reading and Language Arts assignments are usually distributed every Friday for the following week, as well as Mrs. Moran's assignments for Math and Science; however, I am now sending home all assignments on one sheet for each class for the time being. On her website, Mrs.Moran has all rubrics for the projects her students will be completing with her, and I have distributed the rubrics for my ELA, Reading and/or Social Studies projects. You can link from one page to the other via www.hannanacademy.org or by clicking on the link at the left of this webpage. Parents, please help your child to be a good school citizen. Encourage your child to follow school rules, respect others, bring in boxtops, old phone books, used ink cartridges, cell phones and other electronics to recycle, and help others. We have been reviewing the new school discipline plan in our blue Handbook/Calendar. Please remember to sign your child's Daily Conduct sheet and look for important papers on WEDNESDAYS in the COMMUNICATOR folder. Our three most important class rules are:
BE PREPARED daily with Homework/Conduct folder & materials.
BE RESPONSIBLE by following all Hannan rules.
BE RESPECTFUL to everyone.
| Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?
WHO WANTS TO BE A READING MILLIONAIRE? WE DO! And we're well on our way. Fourth and fifth graders have been reading a variety of genre from our Junior Great Books series, poetry, and books in our Accelerated Reader program. Students need to read approximately 25-27 books before the May deadline. Student must also continue to keep a record of what is read, and of course, it must be on or above their reading level. Students will produce a variety of book projects and presentations, including book talks, sharing what they have learned from their reading. A list of book project choices and rubrics has been given to students and they will be responsible for presenting the books they read in a variety of formats throughout the year. Fourth and fifth graders should be reading at least six or seven books every nine weeks, write about ALL of them in their reading log, and report on at least three or four of them every nine weeks.Students should be reading at least thirty minutes EVERY night of the week. Parents, please encourage your child to read aloud also, since many of students need improvement in this area.

Reading & Language Arts In our Language Arts class, we will be reviewing all aspects of the writing process. Students are constantly encouraged to look at the Planning Process as being crucial to successful writing, and are asked to keep a Journal. This should be a bound composition book, like the black & white ones. No spiral journals, please. Students are also asked to keep a Reading Log, in which they write summaries and reviews of the books they read. As they write, they will be learning about C.O.P.S., and when I'm wearing my badge, I'm looking out for capital offenses, like forgetting to: CAPITALIZE ORGANIZE PUNCTUATE or SPELL correctly. Please check out the writing links listed to the left. There are some excellent guidelines and examples of the different types of writing that we will be doing this year. There will be a new weekly assignment sheet, with vocabulary & spelling lists sent home separately. Students should keep this sheet in their HW folder, along with their Conduct sheets and MUST BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL DAILY. PLEASE SIGN THE CONDUCT SHEET EVERY DAY and see that your child brings it to school daily. His/her homework to be turned in should always be in that folder.

Math, Science & Social Studies
![]() We love our classes at Hannan Academy!
Students will be creating PowerPoint slideshows and MS Publisher brochures for a variety of Science, Social Studies,Language Arts and Math topics. Please send a CD-RW and/or a thumb drive to school with your child to enable transfer of working files from school to home. To access the Harcourt Math and Social Studies, and our new Science textbooks online, click on the Harcourt link at left. Students will have instructions written in their planners with the passwords for online access. Parents, please see that your child has a chance several times a week to go online to complete some of the activities that are available. There are also many educational interactive games on the links at left. Brainpop.com has free topics to explore, and Scholastic.com is great fun as well. Fourth graders have been working on a Native American Project. Many of their reports, menus, and photographs of their tribal shelters are on display outside our classroom.

Dear Parents... Parents, to schedule a conference with me, write to me at scerrone@mcsdga.net or to Mrs. Moran at emoran@mcsdga.net to let either of us know when you can make it or if you would prefer a phone or an e-mail conference. We would like to touch base with all parents during each nine week period. Thanks. Working together, we can insure your child's success at Hannan Academy.
