Sounds of Music

Shaker

You will need:
Paper plate
Crayons
A small handfull of dry beans or peas
Stapler with staples

Color the bottom side of the paper plate. Fold the plate in half with colored side out. Staple half way around the open edges. Place a small handfull of dry beans or peas into the plate and finish stapling the edges together.

Tamborine

You will need:
A large tubular cardboard food container (We used the large oatmeal containers)
Scissors
Construction paper
Glue
Blunt point needle with large eye (like the kind you use for cross-sticthing)
24" String
5 Jingle bells

1. Cut the tube down to approximately 2" from the bottom.
2. Use the scissors to puncture 5 evenly spaced holes in the cardboard.
3. Decorate the cardboard with construction paper and glue on lid, side, and bottom.
4. Thread the string on the needle. Starting on the inside guide the needle and thread through one of the holes, leaving a 4" tail. Sew through a jingle bell, and guide the needle and thread back through the same hole it came out of.
5. Repeat step four until you have all five jingle bells sewed on. Tie the two ends of the string together and trim.
6. Place the decorated lid on and shake to the beat!

Girl Scout Ways

Sit-Upon (9/3/07)

You will need:
Construction paper (we used cardstock)
Crayons, colored pencils, markers.
Glitter.
Clear contact paper.

1. Color one side of the piece of paper.

2. Cut two pieces of clear contact paper slightly larger than the paper.

3. Place paper on one piece of contact paper colored side down.

4. Sprinkle glitter on the paper and cover with the other piece of contact paper.

5. Trim edges of contact paper to 1/2" of paper edge.

Movers

Promise Pinwhell (9/12/07)

You will need:
A pencil with an eraser
A 6" square of construction paper (we used cardstock)
A straight pin
2 seed beads
A small bit of clay
A ruler
A sharpened pencil

1. With your ruler draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner. Repeat with the other two corners.

2. Starting at the corners cut along lines approximately 3".

3. Place a bead on the pin.

4. Fold the four blades into center but do not crease folds!

5. Pass pin through the center of the pinwheel. This will hold the four blades together.

6. Slide the other bead onto the pin.

7. Stick pin through eraser. Use clay, tape, or another eraser to cover pin point.

Law Windsock (9/26/07)

You will need:
A 6"x18" piece of construction paper
Crayons
Stickers (optional)
Tissue paper strips approximately 1" wide and 2' long - one in each color representing the Girl Scout Law (lt. blue, yellow, spring green, red, orange, purple, magenta, green, rose, and violet)
A 30" piece of string
Tape
Hole punch

1. Decorate one side of the construction paper with crayons or stickers.

2. Tape the strips of tissue paper to the back of the construction paper.

3. Make a ring by taping the ends of the constuction paper together.

4. Punch two holes in the top of the windsock opposite from each other.

5. Thread the string through the holes and tie.

Balloon Rocket

On a long piece of string, thread a straw. Inflate a balloon, but do not tie it off. While holding the air inside the balloon, tape it to the straw. Hold the string taunt and let go of the balloon!

Kite

You will need:
a square piece of construction paper
two straws
tape
a piece of string approximately 1yd long
a piece of tissue paper 1in x 24in

1. Color one side of the construction paper.

2. On the back of the paper tape the straws in an "X" with the ends pointing at the corners.

3. Tie the string around the straws where they meet in the middle.

4. Tape the tissue paper to the bottom corner of the construction paper.

Birds

Bouncing Turkey

you will need:
2 cardboard circles approximately 4"-6" in diameter
1 orange chenille stem
1 red chenille stem
1 head/neck piece cut out of brown construction paper
1 small sqare of orange construction paper
2 google eyes
1 rubber band
assorted feathers
glue

**Important Tip**- Make sure the holes/lines on the cardboard circles are always up/down

1. Fold the orange chenille stem in half to make legs. Cut a one inch piece off of both ends. Wrap the pieces around the legs to make feet. Glue to one cardboard circle.

2. Cut the rubber band and flatten to make one long strip of elastic. Glue to the cardboard circle opposite from the legs.

3. Glue the two cardboard circles together with the front circle slightly lower than the back one, making sure to catch the rubber band in between them.

4. Glue the head/neck on to the top circle. Fold the orange sqaure in half to make a triangular beak. Glue to the head. Glue the eyes above the beak.

5. Wrap the red chenille stem around your finger to make a wattle for the turkey. Glue the wattle below the beak.

6. Stick a feather inside the front cardboard circle on each side to make wings.

7. Stick lots of feathers in the groove holes at the top of both the front and back circles to give the turkey a colorful tail.

Colors and Shapes

Play Dough

You will need:
1 cup cornstarch
1 cup salt
1 1/2 cups flour
water
food coloring (optional)

Mix all dry ingredients together. Add 1/2 cup water and mix. Add water a teaspoon at a time as needed. Add a couple of drops of food coloring if desired.

Christmas Shapes Wreath

You will need:
1 empty cereal box
green and red construction paper
open cookie cutters in various shapes
pencil
scissors
glue

1. Cut a 6" circle from the cereal box. Cut a 4" circle from the middle of the 6" circle. This is the base.

2. Trace your hand on a piece of green construction paper. Cut it out. Repeat until you have 8 "hands".

3. Arrange the "hands" on the circle base to simulate leaves. Glue into place.

4. On red construction paper, trace 4 or 5 various shapes, using cookie cutters as stencils if desired. Cut out and glue onto wreath.

Variations:
Valentine's Day - use heart shapes.
Easter - instead of red shapes use pastel paper with egg, bunny, and baby chick shapes.
Spring - also use pastel paper and make flower shapes.
Fall - instead of green paper use yellow, orange, and red. Use brown paper to make pinecones and nuts.
