Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is the premiere Greek-letter organization established by and for African American college-trained women. The history of its origin, growth and development, activities, evolving goals and accomplishments is more than an interesting chronicle of a colorful bit of college-based Americana. Formed January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown to over 180,000 members, worldwide, from educators to presidents.
Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, nine Howard University honor students, Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe and Marie Woolfolk Taylor assembled to establish Alpha Kappa Alpha.
These ladies then choose seven sophomores, Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice Murray, Sarah Meriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Carrie Snowden and Harriett Terry, to ensure the continuity of the organization following their graduation.
Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated as a perpetual body in 1913. Led by Nellie Quander, her incorporators include Norma Boyd, Julia Brooks, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Nellie Pratt Russell and Minnie Smith.
Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha is in the midst of celebrating 100 years of being Supreme in Service to All Mankind. The focus of the organization includes Economic Growth, Entrepreneurship, the Black Family, Education, and maintaining optimal health.
