Mr. Jared Handley came to Fayette County, Georgia and was a large land owner. In 1854 he gave land for a cemetry, church and school. Little is known about who owns or is responsible for Hopewell Cemetery. There is a possibility that it was a private cemetery and lots were sold. At this time information to validate this has not been found or validated. Many Confederate and some Union soldiers are also buried in this cemetery.

Hopewell Methodist Church was located next door to this cemetery until 1999 when the property was sold to The City of Tyrone and the City Hall was moved to the property where the church was located. The school which stood next to the church burned and then was rebuilt.

Hopewell Cemetery has been in poor condition for a while. The premises have been mowed and trimmed and everything looks good. We are planning to keep it this way. If you would like to join us you may e-mail Shirley, Scott, or Mark.
