Here are some pre-pictures of the skatepark.

This is a pre shot from the 5th floor of the building we live in.

Before I started building this area was used for an uninvited bathroom, bedroom, place to do drugs, or whatever else you can imagine.

The urine stentch was so intense that it would make my eyes water in seconds of being back there. A volunteer group from out of town came in and helped me clean the area out. After getting all the trash and bird doodoo out of there, I pressured-washed the entire area with muratic acid, and much to my surprise, the stentch was still there. I even tried two and a half gallons of laudry detergent thinking that would clear it up, and it did for about a week, but the stentch quickly came back. The only thing that worked was leaving the sawdust on the floor. Apparently it soaked all the stentch up. Either way, it is an amazing blessing to be able to breath fresh air back there now.

The volunteer group even pulled all the weeds out for me.

One of the biggest achievements yet was getting the fence up. Without a fence, people would not respect that anyone was trying to build and improve the area. The next great achievement is to build a wall on top of the I beam above the fence in order to keep the pigeons out. I've tried everything I can think of short of building the wall to keep the bird doodoo off of my ramp, but nothing has worked.

This will be the only skatepark in downtown Atlanta, the only free skatepark in the Atlanta area with a half pipe, and one of two skateparks in Atlanta with a complete bowl. That's pretty exciting.

All of the ramp will be 4ft tall except the section on the far left which will be 5ft tall. This will give the kids more options to play with. The entire ramp itself will be 24ft wide, which is farely large for a half pipe.

This roll-in is pretty intense. It is about seven and a half feet tall with 6-8 inches of vert. I can't wait to see who will play with that!

In this area up here I plan to put some couches and a TV so everyone will have something to do while others are skating.

Here are the most recent pictures as of January 2004.

I'm so excited because I only have 5 more pieces of framework to build before I can start putting the top layers on.

Unfortunately though, I still have some major facility work to do.

I still have to build a wall on top of the I-beam above the fence and do some major reconstruction work on the roof. The only thing keeping me from repairing the roof is my lack of scaffolding. I am lacking one full section of scaffolding and I can't seem to round some up anywhere. If anyone knows of some that I can use, please let me know as soon as possible so I can keep the rain from ruining the ramp.

Since I am at a stand-still with building the ramp untill I can get some more materials I decided to build some ramps out of scraps so that we can have something to play with until the skatepark is finished.

It's amazing that just this week I've already had the opportunity to build relationship with some of the people who live in the sanctuary as well as other kids who have never even heard of this place by simply playing around on these ramps. One kid saw my little ramps from the local transit and wanted to come check it out. He was amazed at what all I'm building and wants to just come and hang out with us.

This is Blaine, one the guys in our sanctuary. Before this week he didn't have a clue how to skate, but saw us outside having fun and just wanted to hang with us.

Here's Phil again. He doesn't care anything for skating, but he loves to come and hang out with us and watch us make a fool of ourselves.
