![]() Welcome Aboard Mates to Mrs. Shoultz's Fifth Grade Class website. I hope you had an enjoyable summer break and now you are ready to get busy learning something new and doing some exciting things, too! We are beginning our first nine weeks of your fifth grade year in school. This is such an important time and we have so much to do. Remember its always a good idea to do your best at all times and you're also encouraged to use your time wisely. We would like for you to visit our websites for ideas, links, and other websites to visit, to visit the Columbus Public Library, the local Musuems, the parks, and other local places of interest. It is also a fabulous time to do a great deal of reading during your free moments.
Please refer to the list of Language Arts tasks on the left side and use your books, notes, and other sources to make certain that you are familiar with each of these key items and others that will be given to you. You can visit the CRCT practice test on the computer and if you do not have access to a computer at home, you can sign up and use the ones in the library. In Math, we are concentrating on subtracting, adding, dividing, and multiplying whole numbers and decimals, estimation, and problem solving. You should continue practicing these while you are at home. Use your textbooks, practice books, and worksheets that you are given to take home with you. These will help you to be successful mathematicians. Remember to ask for help when you need it.
In Social Studies we will begin working on Mapskills and Geography while using the computer. We will also use textbooks and other sources. Students will be assigned several terms and events to define and place in their Social Studies notebooks. Assignments for the week include the completion of this week's Spelling practice pages for Unit 3 words. (These are due by Friday.) Write the 25 words in ABC order and study them for our weekly Spelling test on Friday. Reading AR books every night for 15 or more minutes. Reading and studying Science, Social Studies, and Math facts.
We are still encouraging students to READ, READ, READ, READ EVERYDAY!
Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum
![]() We are encouraging all students to become Millionaires by reading a million words or more. Students will read AR books, write responses, and take AR tests. These strategies will help to improve comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and written expression. Please remember to read every evening/night at home for at least 15 minutes or more. Please consider visiting and taking your child to the Columbus Public Library. This is a wonderful and beautiful place where they can choose many books to read. We will utilize our Math Journals to write solutions to the problems that we solve and to write responses to various mathematical topics that we read about. We will also visit various websites to find activities that will aid us as we study math. We will utilize our textbook and the computer as we continue our investigations in whole numbers, place values, decimals, and problem solving. In Social Studies and LA, we will begin gathering data, artifacts, pictures, and other items for our legacy projects. We will share more info about this project. In LA, we are studying the kinds of sentences, grammar, paarts of speech and utilizing the wrtiting process to construct various journal pieces. In Reading, we are using our Reading Anthology to read and discuss different themes, identify the main idea, cause/effect relationships, and sequence of events. We are also involved in many small group reading tasks.
