Nutrient Chart 5-A-Day.xls
This 1.44 MB Microsoft Excel v5-7 Spreadsheet was assembled from USDA nutrient data on 11/5/02 by: William Harris, M.D.
HARRISMDW001@hawaii.rr.com
It contains data on 900 unprocessed plant foods in 95 columns including macro nutrients (carbohydrate, fat, and protein), amino acids, carotenoids, fatty acids, isoflavones, minerals, phytosterols, vitamins, and miscellany. With a cable connection it can be downloaded in ~ 30 seconds, longer with a 56K modem.. For Internet Explorer browsers, DOWNLOAD HERE: 5-A-Day.xls For Netscape browsers, RIGHT CLICK HERE. 5-A-Day.xls consists of 4 sheets: "5-A-Day" a food and exercise test with an automatic Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator and a running score based on food intake and exercise, "Database" (main nutrient data sheet), "About", which gives an overview of the entire file, and "NUT_DEF" (USDA nutrient database numbers and definitions). Sorting: How to find the Leaders To sort the entire "Database" sheet on any specific nutrient left click the mouse pointer in cell (A-8) and hold down "Cntrl-Shift-End" to select to the last cell in the worksheet (lower-right corner). Go next to Data/Sort, select "my list has header row", and "sort by descending". Then left-click the small down carat and pick, from the choices in the "sort by" box, the desired column (e.g. Calcium/wt) and click "OK". Excel will sort the file in a few seconds and Cntrl-Home will bring the pointer back to the "freeze pane" cell in column C. Hold down the right arrow key until the appropriate nutrient column appears, showing the descending values. Other Uses: It is advisable not to save "5-A-Day.xls" unless it is renamed since any changes made will disrupt the original data. No provision is made for individual nutritional analysis, however it could be done by copying the top six header rows into a new spreadsheet and then selecting all of the foods eaten in a given period of time and copying those rows into the new spreadsheet. Standard spreadsheet methods could then be used to adjust the food quantities and summarize the nutrient intake. Most of the original USDA files are available for download at: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR13/sr13.html The complete SR13 is downloadable as a flat 14.1 MB Microsoft Excel v 5-7Spreadsheet at: http://www.vegsource.com/harris/food_comp.htm A new database "SR15" will be soon available on CD-ROM at: |
