Americans are eating more veggies | Nutrition Week reports that the average consumption of vegetables and fruits in the US was 741 pounds per person annually during 1997-99. Vegetable consumption increased more rapidly than fruit, rising 24 percent over this period, compared with 8 percent for fruit. Unfortunately, processed potatoes in the form of French fries account for much of this increase. Bananas are the number one pick in fresh fruit. Apples are consumed at an increasing rate, the consumption of oranges has declined.
While all of this is encouraging to some degree,, Americans are still not eating the suggested minimum five servings a day.
According to the 1994-96 Continuing Survey of Food Intake of Individuals, conducted by the USDA, only 23 percent of Americans consumed five servings of fruit and 41 percent servings of vegetables.
