McKinley High School Class of 1977 1976 to 1977 Introduction Within its own microcosm, McKinley High School saw changes both subtle and dramatic in 1976-77. Attempting to conform to the rules while trying to retain one's individuality appeared to be one of the major stumble-blocks for students and faculty alike. But with minor sacrifice - the ability to give and take - and the willingness to try, McKinley's people came through successfully. Becoming more aware and at the same time increasingly uncertain of the world around us both at home and abroad, this niche in the expanse of time seemed appropriate to take a look into whick direction we are headed - a direction sought by the Black and Gold 1977. Reflecting upon the past, contemplating the future and comprehending the present brought our goal....in FOCUS. Politics, Swine Flu, Hokule'a Presidential election - Jimmy Carter over President Gerald Ford State legislature passed a controversial pay raise and pension bill in 1976 that lead to the ousting of seasoned incumbent legislators Spark Matsunaga elected to US Senate and Cec Heftel and Dan Akaka to the House of Representatives Epidemic swine flu immunization program hit the U.S. Bicentennial Year - 1976 Hokule'a returned from Tahiti to a greeting of thousands at Magic Island. CB radio craze was the fad of the time. Student population 2299. 1977 - 752 diplomas 'Acculturation' counselors were available for immigrant students. A permanent chain link fence was installed on Kapiolani Boulevard for the State Farm Fair. Registration for classes in the gym. Banners publicizing school events on the social studies building railing.
