Traditions The color gold was chosen when McKinley High was a very young school and had a close association with Hawaiian Royalty. To complement the gold, the color black was chosen. The colors were chosen also because many McKinley graduates continued their education at Princeton, whose colors were also black and gold. Because of their close relationship with Princeton, the nickname "Tigers" grew. Another tradition which has been followed for the past years has been the tradition of not walking on the grass that grows in the oval; or sitting upon President McKinley's statue, located in the front of the administration building. An annual tradition which started in the 1920's is the washing of President McKinley's statue by the Key Club, which is usually done prior to celebrating Black and Gold Day. CODE OF HONOR
As a student of McKinley, I stand FOR HONESTY In all I do and say; FOR INDUSTRY In study, work, and play; FOR PURITY In spirit, thought and deed; FOR COURAGE To meet life's every need; FOR BROTHERHOOD Of races all combined; AND LOVE For God and all Mankind.
