Welcome to the home page of the Zeta Delta Chapter of the Eta Sigma Alpha Honor Society

MISSION STATEMENT

"The purpose of Eta Sigma Alpha National Home School Honor Society shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among home school students. To achieve this purpose, Eta Sigma Alpha National Home School Honor Society shall provide opportunities for the development of leadership and service. Eta Sigma Alpha shall encourage the development of an intellectual climate that will stimulate the exchange of ideas and ideals, foster scholarship, and promote academic excellence. Eta Sigma Alpha shall also advocate homeschooling as a viable and successful educational methodology and act as a liaison for homeschooling to the general public, colleges/universities, and the media."

About the Zeta Delta Chapter:

The Zeta Delta Chapter of Eta Sigma Alpha is a new chapter of HSA started in the Spring of 2004. It is open to all Oahu home schooled students, grades 7-12, who meet the membership requirements. Each applicant must complete and submit an application form. Applications may be submitted in the summer following the student’s 6th grade year through summer following his/her 11th grade year. See the Membership Requirements page for deadlines to submit applications.

History of Eta Sigma Alpha

Eta Sigma Alpha is the first honor society established exclusively for homeschooled students. It was founded in 1999 by Joanne E. Juren, M.Ed., Executive Director of the Home Education Partnership of Texas. It has grown into a national organization with over 217 chapters in 38 states.

The Greek name Eta Sigma Alpha was chosen as follows: Eta, the Greek letter that is shaped like an "h" and Sigma, the letter for "s" were chosen for Home School;Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Thus, Eta Sigma Alpha means the "first homeschool" honor society.

Why is an Honor Society important?

Many homeschoolers have asked us why having their child in an honor society is important. Colleges and universities, as well as scholarship funds, look at achievements such as honor societies when evaluating their applicants. Homeschooled students are not eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, a well-recognized organization; therefore, Eta Sigma Alpha has stepped in to fill that void for homeschooled students.

It is their way of giving the proper recognition to deserving students.
