With upcoming events planned for the summer season, members of Carstens 1880 Farmstead, Inc. and interested community volunteers are invited to join in this effort to spruce up the farmstead grounds. Clean up day will begin at 2 p.m. “All brooms, rakes, hammers, paint brushes, buckets and saws are welcome”, comments Carstens President Mel Hursey. Jobs that can be done during clean up day include raking leaves, picking up small limbs and sticks, minor repairs to the buildings, and dusting off displays that have been in storage last year. “This past winter brought quite a few limbs down around the farm plus we’ve got a few projects that need to be finished up”, adds Hursey. Carstens 1880 Farmstead is located at 32409 380th St, Shelby, just south of I-80 exit 34. For more information on clean up day call, 712-544-2638. -30- August 30, 2007 25th ANNUAL CARSTENS FARM DAYS SET FOR SEPT. 8 & 9 SHELBY - Iowa farm history comes alive September 8-9 at the 25th Annual Carstens Farm Days. The antique power show is hosted by the Carstens 1880 Farmstead near Shelby, Iowa. Horse, steam and gas power Come out and see steam engines powering antique threshing machines, antique machinery, a parade, crafts, and entertainment. Over two hundred restored antique tractors will be on display. The original Carstens farm buildings will be open for tours. The buildings will be alive with demonstrations that will bring back memories for older visitors and teach valuable lessons to young people. Food for all Several community groups will be preparing food for farm visitors. On Friday evening the Shelby Depot Committee will be serving a pork sandwich dinner from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The dinner is open to the public. The funds raised from this special Friday night dinner will go towards the restoration of the depot in Shelby. Come out to the farm for a sneak peek at the exhibits. All good days begin with a good breakfast and to start Farm Days off right, a pancake breakfast is planned at 6:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The proceeds from the pancake breakfast go to the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department volunteers will serve lunch both days. The Shelby Superstars and Southwest 4-H Clubs will offer delicious desserts all weekend. On Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. enjoy Staley’s Chicken for a delicious dinner. Proceeds from the dinner will go toward on-going maintenance at Carstens 1880 Farmstead. During dinner students from Miss Tammy’s School of Dance in Neola will entertain visitors on the front lawn of the farmhouse. John Deere to be featured John Deere tractors and equipment will be the featured tractor line this year. All John Deere owners are invited to bring their exhibits to display throughout the weekend. Horsepower testing, sawmill operations and field demonstrations will occupy tractor exhibitors all day. Nearly 250 pieces of vintage equipment were on display during the 2006 Farm Days show. Visitors will enjoy watching all of the restored tractors as they go through the parade each day at 2 p.m. Auction A special auction will take place on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. This fundraising auction will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Farm Days. Commemorative Red Wing Crocks numbers 1, 25, and 250 will be on the auction. A rag rug made on the loom in the chicken house and a homemade cherry pie from one of the farm’s own cherry trees will also be available to the highest bidder. A special John Deere quilt will also be auctioned. Other miscellaneous items will also be available. Tractor Pulls The traditional kiddie pedal tractor pull will be held near the corn crib at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. For extra fun this year there will be an adult pedal tractor pull. There will be men’s and women’s divisions. It will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday on the pad of concrete next to the corn crib. There is no entry fee for this contest. Entertainment On Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. the Silver Creek Cloggers will entertain both young and old farmstead visitors alike. Various music acts will add to the fun and folksy atmosphere of Farm Days. Crafts galore In case visitors run out of vintage tractors and other pieces of equipment to look at over fifty crafters and vendors will be on hand. A special display of vintage seed corn sacks will be on display. A wide array of crafts will be available. From unique wooden creations to homemade jams and jellies, there will be something for everyone. A very healthy crop of farm-grown potatoes will also be available for purchase this year. Proceeds from the sale of potatoes will help make improvements to the farmstead. The commemorative Red Wing Crocks will be for sale during Farm Days. The crocks are also available at the Shelby County State Bank in Shelby and the Minden Grocery Store in Minden. Special arrangements to purchase a crock can be made with Lee Dittmer at 483-2056. Wilson Fine Art Print A special Carstens Fine Art Print will be available for purchase. The print, offered by Minden, Iowa artist Michael Wilson and his wife Denise, is the eighth in a series featuring the historic buildings of Carstens 1880 Farmstead. The series is titled, “The Carstens Collection”. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this print will go toward improvements at Carstens 1880 Farmstead. Sunday Worship On Sunday morning a very special worship service will take place on the lawn in front of the Carstens family home. Pastor Duane Anunson of the Shelby Evangelic Lutheran Church will lead the worship service. Admission Admission is $5 for everyone nine years and older. Two day passes may be purchased for $8. For more information visit the web site: www.thefarmstead.org July 30, 2007 COMMUNITY PLANNING MEETING SET FOR CARSTENS FARM DAYS SHELBY- The Board of Directors for Carstens 1880 Farmstead, Inc. will host a community meeting to plan for the 25th Annual Carstens Farm Days Show. The meeting will be held on Monday evening August 13 at the farm. It will begin at 7:00 P.M. Special show committees will be organized at the meeting to prepare for the show which will be held September 8 & 9, 2007. 2007 Farm Days promotional posters will be available for distribution. New events as well as traditional demonstrations will be featured at the 25th annual show. All members of Carstens 1880 Farmstead as well as interested members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting.
