Sharon Savage for Iowa Senate

Sharon Savage of Muscatine, a small business owner, professor, counselor and community activist, is a candidate for the Iowa State Senate in District 40. Senate District 40 covers all of Cedar County; half of Muscatine County including the city of Muscatine; and a small portion of Johnson County.

“Serving in the Iowa Senate is an opportunity for me to apply the experiences I’ve gained as a small business owner and working with hundreds of local students, parents, and other community leaders to bring common sense solutions to the State Legislature,” said Savage, a Democrat. “I will be an active, fiscally responsible voice that will work to ensure that our families have the jobs, schools, health care and public safety necessary to succeed.”

She added: “As parents and grandparents, my husband and I know everyone wants their children to have the best education possible and the opportunity to find good jobs here in Iowa. I will work for continued investment in our local schools and an even playing field that encourages economic development and creates good jobs in Cedar, Muscatine and Johnson Counties.” Before becoming a small business owner, Savage worked in providing social work and individual, group and family counseling services and custody and home studies and for the Department of Human Services as a child abuse worker for several years. She has used her experience to teach others. Savage also teaches Sociology at Muscatine Community College on a part time basis and has worked as an adjunct instructor at the College for 10 years.

Prior to running for the Iowa Senate, Savage was the past President of the Greater Muscatine Downtown Association and is currently co- President of the Muscatine County Arts Council, a member of the Muscatine Foster Care Review Board, Writers on the Avenue, and the League of Women Voters, Friends of Historic Preservation, PEO, and Muscatine Symphony Board. She also wrote a weekly newspaper column in the Muscatine Journal, called Downtown Dispatches and was co-host of the Coffee Club Talk Show with John Schwandke on the local radio station. Savage and her husband, Tom, have been married for 42 years and have two grown sons and one granddaughter. They own Books n’ More, a bookstore in Muscatine as well as a family Century Farm in Salem, Iowa.

Savage said her campaign will focus on talking personally with as many voters as possible. “I believe that listening is one of the best ways to learn. I’m interested in listening to everyone with a concern or an idea about how we move Iowa forward,” said Savage. “People are welcome to call me at my home, (563) 263-7419 or email me at sharon@savageforsenate.org.”
