SEIFF IS AN ASSORTED GROUP OF FLY FISHERS WITH DIVERSE GOALS. OUR INTERESTS VARY AS MUCH AS OUR TECHNIQUES, BUT WE ALL COME TOGETHER FOR COMARADERIE, EDUCATION, CONSERVATION AND MOST OF ALL FOR THE LOVE OF FLY FISHING.

November 12 - Bruce Staples at Portneuf River Outfitters - Fishing Yellowstone Park
Once each year SEIFF offers an open fly tying demonstration during our monthly club meeting. Many of our club members have been guest tiers at the annual “South East Idaho Fly Tying and Fishing Expo” held each spring in Idaho Falls. The Expo invites “Master” level tiers and our club has our share of such outstanding talent. If you have never tied before but would like to start tying as a hobby to complement your fishing this is a outstanding opportunity to learn about the art of fly tying in a casual atmosphere that allows you to observe and ask lots of questions. For the seasoned tier it’s a great opportunity to learn time-saving tying techniques as well as new tying material and patterns. So mark your calendar for a fun and laid back evening with some outstanding tiers.
Our December meeting will also include a continuous movie slide presentation of Darrell Brown and Dan Murbarger fishing Henry’s Lake this fall. This was the guided trip offered by B&S Flies that Dan won in a club drawing earlier in the year. The slide presentation, set to music, will highlight the outstanding fall scenery, cold morning conditions that greeted Dan and Darrell and the colorful cutthroats and rainbow/cutthroat hybrids caught that day.
So join us for a very informative and fun evening.
The outstanding work crew that helped on the Portneuf River fence project on October 24th finished the final stage. This fence building project started in the spring of 2008. This completes the restoration fence building project funded in part by a $10,000 "Embrace A Stream" grant awarded by Trout Unlimited. This section of the river on the Holbrook property completes 2 years of cooperative efforts with Fish & Game and the Department of Environmental Quality. The vast majority of the labor was volunteered.
With this phase of the fence now completed, our efforts have culminated in fence installed totaling 10 miles along the Portneuf River (i.e., 5 miles on both sides of the river). Installation of the fence has dramatically improved the water quality, stream banks, and riparian health by fencing the riparian corridor that will significantly help restore the habitat of the native Yellowstone cutthroat trout.
I would like to personally thank all those who participated in this outstanding project and to say, "Job Well Done". Work day after scheduled work day the request for help was sent out and we averaged 8-10 volunteers who answered the call totaling over 475 man hours!

Friday & Saturday, April 2 & 3, 2010
There will be two sessions of tying each day, the first of which will be from 9 am to 12:30 pm (morning session), and the second will be from 1 to 4:00 pm (afternoon session). Tying time slots will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. All tiers should come prepared with a tying lamp to meet your needs, and a household extension cord is recommended.
Boise Valley Fly Fishermen, a thirty-eight year affiliate of the Federation of Fly Fishers, in conjunction with the Western Region Rocky Mountain Council of the FFF, are proud to jointly sponsor this event. This is a gathering that will allow Idaho and other regional fly tiers to show their talents to the fly-fishing public and exchange ideas, new and old. Collectively, BVFF and the WRMC bring a lot of talent and experience to the table and we are really looking forward to working together to host this event.
Friday, April 2nd from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, there will be a reception at the Double Tree Inn. This reception is open to fly tiers, vendors and other invited guests.
Saturday evening, there will be a banquet with a program, dinner, raffle and auction. The Boise Valley Fly Fishermen and Western Rocky Mountain Council (FFF) will earmark funds raised at this event for various regional conservation undertakings.

THOMAS FORK PROJECT: An ongoing project with TU, Idaho Fish and Game, local landowners to restore habitat to the Thomas Fork Bonneville Cutthroat population.
UPPER PORTNEUF RIVER FENCING PROJECT: An ongoing project with Idaho Fish and Game and local landowners to add new fence and repair old fence section of the upper Portnuef River drainage to improve riparian habitat.

2008 EMBRACE-A-STREAM PROJECT, PORTNEUF RIVER:
The Portneuf River is a southeast Idaho tributary to the Snake River. It is home to native Yellowstone cutthroat trout as well as to introduced rainbow and brown trout. Up through the 1960s the upper Portneuf River was considered one of Idaho’s best trout streams. By the mid-1980s, cumulative effects of agricultural practices changed the Portneuf River substrate from cobble-gravel to mainly fine sediment. The deterioration in the trout fishery soon followed. Throughout the past 20 years of restoration of the upper Portneuf River, anglers and the Department of Fish and Game have taken the opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of the riparian corridor fences to anglers, landowners and the general public.
Such an opportunity is now coming together on the Holbrook property and the local Troat Unlimited Chapter, SEIFF, is organizing volunteers and, in conjunction with the Idaho Fish & Game, is working to obtain funds for riparian corridor fence construction and maintenance. The Holbrook section lies within a five mile river reach that Idaho Department of Fish and Game manages for native cutthroat trout. (Download the complete proposal and budget this Adobe PDF file)

2009/2010 Events
The club is again scheduling raparian fence building and water spots along the Portneuf River. Our staging area is just passed Whiskey Mike's place on the left hand side just over the railroad tracks. We are planning our fall work days in October and November before the winter season is upon us again.
I hope you had a successful fishing season. I look forward to seeing you again this fall season when our club meetings resume.

SEIFF IS PROUD TO SUPPORT
"GET HOOKED ON FISHING NOT ON DRUGS".
THIS LOCAL PROGRAM IS DIRECTED BY OUR PROGRAMS CHAIR, TOM BANYAS. TOM'S KID'S VENTURE OUT SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR TO "GET HOOKED". THEY EVEN MAKE MID-WINTER TRIP IN SEARCH OF ICE FISHING.
Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs:
The Franklin Fishing Club made a successful trip to Chesterfield last Saturday, January 4. This was the 10th annual ice fishing trip by the Franklin group headed up by Mr. Tom Banays. Tom reports that the fishing was spotty but the "no wind" conditions prevailed until lunch time when the fishing winds down. The only eventful event was before the group left town. The staged buses at Franklin Middle School decided to shut their engines down and one of the buses could not get restarted. This did not deter the group from pressing forward and with volunteer drivers, no one was left behind. Approximately 80 seventh and eighth grade students braved the cold and tried their luck ice fishing at Chesterfield to hook the big ones through the ice. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this outing possible and such a success. From the hole drillers to the gourmet hot dog and hot chocolate cooks, the volunteer support was awesome.

YOUTH PROGRAMS
TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM (TIC) PROJECT

I would like to provide you an update regarding the Trout in the Classroom program here in southeast Idaho, including an overview of the workshop held this past January.
So far during school year 2008-2009, the teachers have really been enjoying TIC with much success. If you remember, last year we held the very first TIC workshop for teachers in southeast Idaho and increased the total classrooms involved in the program from one to nine, extending participation to American Falls, Blackfoot, and Marsh Valley.
In January 2009, we held another very successful Trout in the Classroom workshop at Snake River Junior High near Blackfoot. Gregg Losinksi, another IDFG Regional Conservation Educator from the Upper Snake region, co-taught the workshop and contributed terrific talents and knowledge. We also had incredible help from Jeffrey Seggerman and other American Falls Hatchery staff as they donated time and energy to conduct a hatchery tour, dissect fish, and give presentations . Brenda Beckley, our Aquatic Education Coordinator out of Boise, sent over tons of supplies, materials, and lent tremendous support. In fact, through an EPA grant, she provided funds to cover the costs of the workshop and even paid for lodging for those teachers traveling from out of the area!
We had 20 teachers and two TIC volunteers attend from all over southeastern and eastern Idaho. The Upper Snake region now has TIC in full swing, and we added even more classrooms here in this region. Our grand total for TIC participation here in southeast Idaho is now 16 classes, adding Shelley and Preston to the mix, ranging from 1st grade to high school! And, one of the teachers works with the After School Program at her elementary school, meaning that children from various classes and age groups can participate together in this educational experience at one school.
Because of the generous donations from SEIFF, JR Simplot Co, PetCo in Pocatello and private donations administered through your club as well as funds contributed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, we have enough money to ensure that each teacher enrolled in TIC in southeast Idaho has equipment and chillers. What a fantastic feat!!
Thank you so much for all of your efforts, support, and funding. SEIFF made the expansion of TIC in this region possible, and on behalf of the teachers and Idaho Department of Fish and Game, I extend our thanks and appreciation.

On April 26, 2008 the local Idaho Fish & Game district office presented SEIFF, at a special awards banquet, the "Outstanding Volunteer Club of the Year Award".
