I am pleased to announce that the sixth and the seventh graders together have collected enough supplies for the soldiers in Iraq to fill 8 boxes! These boxes have included basic supplies like chapsticks, notepads, and snacks, but have also included more thoughtful gifts like books and CDs. In addition to ‘store-bought' items, there has also been numerous handmade cards and gifts, and homemade baked goods. Even a fleece blanket signed by the students! They have written they liked these items the best!
Mrs. Brown's nephew Howard Cable is in the Army in Iraq. He has been there since last summer and will not return until, at the earliest, June. We have written many letters to not just Howard but also to a number of soldiers there. In return, the soldiers have written us letters and have sent us small tokens from Iraq. We have received: examples of their money, interesting maps, and postcards with facts about the country. We plan to continue to collect items for this platoon throughout the school year. As soon as the box if full, Mrs. Brown will mail it. Help us reach our goal of 10 boxes! (Next scheduled mailing will be at the end of this month.) If anyone would like to contribute, please drop off the items at Allen Jr. High office marked: FOR THE SOLDIERS Here are a couple of items that they have a need for: (for a complete list-See Mrs. Brown) snacks (no chocolate), baby wipes, hand sanitizer, gum, old magazines, and stationary.
