OVERVIEW

Purpose: Music Technology is a course that intends to introduce the high school student to software programs that will help them further develop their music skills and knowledge. Using the software, students will learn how to input music, how to use software to accompany musicians, and how to record/loop music. The course provides the student with three basic software skills:

  1. Notation Software

  2. Accompaniment Software

  3. Sequencing Software

Rationale: Music Technology has many functions in the music creation. Music technology assists students in every type of music class: performance and non performance classes alike. Music Technology is used in five basic ways: 1. musical and performing support; 2. for drill and practice; 3. for student research; 4. for creative student learning, composition, and musical exploration; and 5. as a teacher resource. We will use the Music Technology class to help students learn how to use the software for the first four uses.

Perquisite: There are no assumptions about a student’s technical ability using a computer or computer software. Music Technology is designed for the novice. However, some perquisites for the class are:

· Literate in music reading

· Instructor Permission

· Readiness learn from and assist others with different skills and interests

· Willingness to learn independently and take initiative and a

· Willingness to undergo frustrations and difficulties when learning new software

· Uses of music technology today

· Music Technology terminology

· Notation software for arranging

· Accompaniment software for singing, playing, and improvising

· Sequencing software for compositions

OUTCOMES

At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to:

    1. Describe how the student can use technology to further their musical developments and knowledge,

    2. use music notation software to prepare printed music for student use,

    3. use accompaniment software to prepare accompaniments for singing, and playing,

    4. use music sequencing software for student composition assignments

    5. explain basic concepts about MIDI and apply them while using software,

    6. describe and connect the components of simple MIDI workstations, and

    7. manage files and disks with the computer’s operating system.

MATERIALS

  • 3 to 4 CDR Discs (80 minutes)

  • 3 to 4 Floppy Discs

  • Folders or binders for class materials

  • Writing utensils

ORGANIZATION

Class Periods: Class Periods will include four types of activities:

· Presentations and demonstrations by the instructor,

· Guided practice with instructor leading software by students,

· Individual hands on practice, and

· Discussions

· Lab time

GRADING

Projects: You will be given assignment in the form of projects that must be completed by an assigned due date. These vary in the amount of time required to complete the project. Projects which are submitted late will be graded lower by 10% after one week.

Quizzes: Most topics will have a quiz to be completed during class time and turned in to the instructor. Student will be responsible for making up any quizzes within a week of absence.

Grading: Projects will be evaluated based on how well they are ready for use by students. See each specific assignment for the breakdown of the points. The schedule of assignments indicates the number of points which can be earned for each project and quizzes.

Objective

· Understand and use the main features of Band-in-a-Box as accompaniment software

· Chose the right settings to work with a MIDI keyboard

· Create an accompaniment part for your own use

· Understand and describe the limitations of Band-in-a-Box

Overview

The Project requires you:

1. Create a Band in a Box file for a piece with chords and a melody

2. Save a Standard MIDI file from your Band in a Box file

3. Print the lead sheet and chords using your Band in a Box file

4. Write a one page paper discussing the usefulness and limitations of Band in Box

Some possible Accompaniments you might need:

1. Accompaniment for solo/ensemble contest

2. Accompaniment for practicing

3. Accompaniment for a jazz/rock piece

4. Accompaniment for improvisation

Directions

1. Choose a piece of music that you or one of your peers might be able to use. Think about what your current needs are in regards to learning music or if you might have your own ensemble

2. Using the skills you learned in class and the Band-in-a-Box manuals, enter your chords and record your melody. Make other settings and changes until you get the sound you want and a printed lead sheet that meets your needs.

3. In a short paper, discuss these questions:

A. Why did you choose this piece of music? What can you or your peers use it for?

B. Describe how you experimented with the program. What styles did you use? What advanced settings or features did you use?

C. Describe some of the strengths and weaknesses of Band in a Box for creating accompaniments.

Lead sheet details

Your printed lead sheet should include melody and chords and be of good enough quality for your or another musician’s use.

It should have a title, composer name (if appropriate), and tempo marking. Do not print the lead sheet with a harmonized melody or with a bass clef staff. Study the Print dialog box carefully to select appropriate options.

Notation Project

Notating a Score with MIDI playback

The Notation Project requires you to enter, print, playback, and record a piece of music that is your own arrangement. It can be for small or large ensembles or even soloists. Your score should be a minimum of 3 staves and be at least one major section of a piece. Or, you can do 2 or 3 shorter, simpler pieces such as duets.

Make sure this is useful to you. For example, if you heard a song on the radio that you would like to be made into a brass quartet, the notation software will be able to make this happen for you. After completing the score, please write a one to two page paper in which you describe the usefulness of notation software and why you chose to arrange this specific piece of music.

Criteria for Grading

· See notation assignment grading rubric

Suggestions

· Have you ever performed a piece of music in a large ensemble and would like to have it performed in a smaller ensemble? Find the score and arrange it for whatever instruments (vocal or instrumental). It can even be made for a rock band.

· Are there pieces of music you’ve performed in choir or at church that you’d like to see become an instrumental work?

· Have you heard a pop song on the radio you think would be a great jazz chart?

· Take a piece of music that is a women’s voice quartet and make it into a man’s voice octet?

To Complete this Project

1. You should have:

b. Printed all pages of the score

c. Extracted and printed all parts

d. Make a cd of what you entered

e. Write a one to two page paper that addresses these items:

1. Name a briefly describe the music you are preparing as a score. Why did you chose this music selection?
